Smile Windows 7 on Mini 10v - 06-16-2009, 09:09 AM

Hi Guys,

I'm seriously considering purchasing a mini 10v and have been looking at various reviews and opinions, especially on these forums. I was just wondering, from anyone who has used it, how is the windows 7 os running on the dell mini 10v. I would be looking to use it for basic office use, internet, email, IM, and very simple Visual studio use.

Is the screen resolution of the 10v enough, does it really need 2GB of ram in your opinion to run smoothly?

If you could let me know of your experiences and opinions, that would be great!

Thanks very much
Sam

I dunno about the 2 GB being strictly necessary, but it certainly doesn't hurt. For what I use the 10v for, the screen res is fine, although it does cause issues with some apps and settings pages and such.

I am running windows 7 on my Mini 10v and use it very similary to what you're referring to. I'm a development manager at a software shop and I bring it to all of my meetings. Run Evernote to take notes at said meetings. Run SQL Express 2008 to run current databases and to attach to remote databases. I run Visual Studio Web Developer Express and visual Studio C# Express on it to validate functionality of code. Look up coding samples on the internet, check email, give presentations using the vga port hooked up to a scanner while also running gotomeeting or Microsoft sharedview so remote users can also see it.

That being said it is running fantastic. It's everything I hoped it would be. I have installed some aftermarket upgrades that are definitely helping with that. Namely, 2GB memory upgrade, and 30GB OCZ Vertex SSD drive. But for the use I described above it really is working well for me.

Granted I wouldn't want to code all day on it, or create 50 page documents on it directly. But for the tasks above it's really working well and I've stopped using paper completely and become more efficient in meetings since I don't need to search through my notebook for notes on the meeting I had 3 weeks ago, etc...

Hi guys, thanks both for your responses. You were both very helpful, especially rod.ratajczak, you mentioned evernote. I'm a student at university currently and would almost definitely be using this piece of software, its great to know that the screen resolution doesn't present any immediate problems as far as that is concerned. It sounds like the level of coding you use your mini for is also much the same mine would be!

I'm still undecided about the 2GB ram upgrade, i mean ideally it'd be great to have the extra speed but i'm a bit wary about dismantling essentially the whole netbook to upgrade the ram. Anguish, your upgrade video has been (will be) very useful if i decide to take the plunge on a 10v!

Any other thoughts are welcomed!

Many Thanks
Sam

Well, i bit the bullet and ordered...

But not the Dell, I got fed up of waiting for a 2GB RAM model to be released, or at least one that makes it easy to upgrade yourself! So i went for the new Samsung N310. Seems to offer pretty much the same as the dell mini 10v, hopefully without the annoying trackpad issues as well!
