Default same here... - 07-01-2009, 11:36 PM

Just got my mini 10 yesterday. Freezes on shutdown. My BIOS version A05.

UPDATE: So Ive done the following, reinstalled the system (actually somebody from dell has done it remotely), after that I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2009 trial and also used the Norton Removal Tool as well. From windows update I only selected WMP 11 from the optional updates, did not install any other optional updates. After I proceded with other updates and programs as Ive done the 1st time. The problem seems to be gone now. I dont know whether this is the solution, but untill now it helped me. If it starts happening again ill let you guys know...

Default Shutdown Freeze - Windows XP - Mini 10v - 07-11-2009, 07:01 AM

I have just got my 10v and did all the various windows updates, updated the BIOS to A03 (latest one on Dell's site), removed the Norton Programs and I am getting Shutdown freezing as well. However, it does not seem to affect Restart, Logoff or Suspend modes.

Other than doing a complete reinstall has anyone solved this issue?

My best guess is that there is some sort of hardware driver stability issue that is causing Windows to hang at shutdown. Sometimes applications running and not closing properly can hold up shutdown as well, but I think this is less likely the case. Any clues in the DEVICE MANAGER? I heard many shutdown issues were addressed in the recent XP service pack(s). Do you have SP3 installed? Win 7 is still new ... so I wouldn't expect all the hardware driver issues to be perfectly resolved ... but still ...

I'd update all the video, audio, and other hardware drivers I could from the DELL support site. I'd make sure BIOS was up-to-date. See if this does the trick. If not, go looking for more recent ones that DELL may not have updated and tested. For Win 7, look for Vista drivers of the component. Definitely communicate with DELL. They should be doing all this for us ... and be updating their driver database and support site with the stable drivers. Still ... If you find a specific, stable fix, tell them about it!

Have you run the Nortol Removal Tool after uninstalling Norton?

Default Shutdown Freeze - Windows XP - Mini 10v - 07-13-2009, 02:27 PM

No I have not run the Nortol Removal Tool - Thanks for the suggestion.

Previously I had done the following berfore my original post. I have downloaded and updated all drivers from Dell, run Windows Update - this picked up the usual wireless driver update required which seems to be an MS issue if the wireless is disabled. I have also run a registry cleaner to clear out the usual dross in the registry. I suspect it is a service or driver issue and the trick would be to find the driver/service that is not stopped by a logout or suspend - if there is such a beast.

Thanks for the help.

Hmm add me to the list for this on my 10v with the original XP install. I was getting ready to remove that and put my own install on it but from others posts that does not seem to be the solution. I would venture to say it is a driver issue, and I can confirm it is not the wireless drivers as I have changed those completely. It is not the anti virus because I run McAfee and others are running Norton etc.. Besides I run McAfee on 5 other PC's without issue. I will start with the audio and video drivers. And see where that takes me. The video drivers are the most recent but I might need to roll them back. Could be the BIOS as well.

I am curious were any of you running Google Desktop? I put that on this thing the day I got it and I have had issues with it on other systems in the past.

Well I can confirm it is not the sound drivers. Maybe the video will test that next. I have gotten a "you have the wrong display settings" message everytime I start this thing up since day 1.
