Cool 04-11-2011, 12:53 AM

the largest drive that will fit is 750gb, I have one, any larger will not fit, I actually wanted the terabyte, but the TB is 12.5mm and too thick (the extra platters and heads I guess)....the largest in 9mm which is what will fit is 750gb, there are many places to get it....I got mine from Dell (750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue..5400rpm)..they run roughly $100-$110 (USD), as far as RAM goes, there also are many places, me personally just prefer to buy from Dell.....the money difference isnt really important to me.....if you want a fly by night company from China or Japan I am sure you can get it cheaper.....Good Luck

PS. I am thinking of swapping mine out for a Western Digital Scorpio Black which is a 7200rpm drive....you might wanna think about that one too......

FWIW: Newegg is pretty good:

Scorpio Blue 750gb 5400rpm Drive $89.00 (USD)
WESTERN DIGITAL 750GB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive 8MB 5400RPM 2.5IN Scorpio Blue : Storage, Drives & Media | Dell

Scorpio Black 750gb 7200rpm Drive $115 (USD)
WESTERN DIGITAL 750GB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive 16MB 7200RPM 2.5IN Scorpio Black : Storage, Drives & Media | Dell

2GB Memory $51 (USD)

It says its for the 1012 but the memory for the 1011 (10v) is the same, the only difference is the speed, I dont think that the 10v will run 800mhz I think it runs 557mhz..could be wrong but this memory will work for you

Any DDR2 memory with support for DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 speeds , faster than 800mhz is overkill as where the system will not run it faster than that

its up to you on whether you want the 5400rpm or the 7200rpm drive, the difference is about $25 (USD)...Western Digital says there is no difference on the battery draw from the faster drive....

PS. The faster drive (Scorpio Black) does have the 16mb cache where as the Scorpio Blue is cached at 8mb, which basically means that the drive that has the 16gb cache will have to work a little less harder because it holds more in cache without having to read from the drive again, cache is kinda like a temporary memory that the drive uses to eliminate having to do another read again

yes, that drive will work, I personally prefer Western Digital over Seagate drives but thats just my opinion...the hydrid drives are kinda new technology its a cross between and SSD and a standard drive, again personally I am not sure how dependable these hybrids are....but its your money......Good Luck

PS. you realize that this 500gb hybrid drive is more expensive than the 750gb I mentioned above and both are 7200rpm drives, so basically you are spending more money and losing 250gb and you are dealing with a seller located in Hong Kong which might complicate returns and or refunds

well, the hybrid is 32mb and the WD is 16mb, but if the processor (remember its a Mini) cant keep up with it, it doesnt matter if you have 1gb of cache.....it doesn't matter how much data the drive can shuffle back and forth if it still has to wait for the processor to catch up..it will speed up the shutdown/startup because the disk can manage data faster, but the difference is not going to be monumental..keep in mind that these systems arent real good at real disk intensive operations as it is, things like photoshop and a like are still gonna be sluggish regardless of the disk caching

no, the crystal HD will not work, OSX will be fine, as far as the BIOS goes, IF IT WORKS...DONT TOUCH IT.....I am one of those people who are dead set against touching the BIOS......they have A11 out for my Mini 10 and I am on A10 (came that way) and I see absolutely no reason to update/upgrade it.......I have been on this board a long time and I have read many, many stories of people who insist on upgrading their BIOS (why? I have no idea...some people just have to have the latest of everything), and a lot of those people wind up with a 3 pound paperweight/doorstop.....its up to you, but personally I wouldnt touch it
