Default Is the mini 10 faster than the mini 9 (real world vs benchmarks)? - 09-15-2010, 07:49 PM

Hi,

I like the size of my mini 9 & I use it as a tech support PC when on the road. It is so slow I think I cant take it any more. Would the mini 10 be much faster or just a little faster.

Thanks,
Rich

as one Rich to another Rich.....the processor in the 10 is faster but the trade off is that the 9 uses an SSD which is known to be faster than the HD in the 10...so its kinda of a trade off...so in answer to your question the 10 would be a somewhat faster not a lot faster....nothing to blow you away for sure....

Rich

PS. unless maybe if you put an SSD in the 10 then you might notice some larger difference..not to mention the 9 can handle 2gb where has depending on the model of the 10 the 10v can also handle 2gb and the 1012 and 1018 also, but the original Mini 10 is confined to 1gb

Dell Mini 10 (Obsidian Black 1010), 2gb RAM, 1.6ghz 533mhz FSB (Z530) processor,A10 BIOS, 750gb WD Scorpio Blue Hard Drive (5400rpm), Intel GMA 500 Integrated Graphics, TV Tuner, Bluetooth 2.1 module with EDR, 1.3mp Camera, 1366x768 HD Screen, Wireless 1510 b/g/n mini card, 6 cell (56WHr) Battery..every option except GPS (wasnt out yet), 4gb SDHC, 8gb Flashdrive, Targus Netbook Chillpad, Targus Sport Case, Windows XP Pro SP3 (98gb)/Windows 7 Ultimate (600gb) (Dual Boot)

Compared to a Mini 9:

Most 1010 netbooks have slower CPUs, and the 1010 has a very slow IO interface, but the 1010 should be faster for video decoding.

The 10v/1011 is equal, but has a slightly faster optional CPU, and can be outfitted with faster SSDs.

The 1012 and 1018 are slightly faster, and should be able to take advantage of even faster SSDs than the 1011.

But no single core Atom CPU netbook will be an earth shattering upgrade. I have a 1012 and a 9. The 1012 has a much faster SSD, which is noticeable at times. But much of the time, performance is similar.

If you want a serious upgrade, while still staying small, look into dual core "netbooks", like Intel's CULV models. This includes the Inspiron 11z.

So if I bought the latest mini 10, can I put a SSD & 2 gigs & will it be fast?

Are there any 2.5 pound netbooks that are dual core?

I love that the mini9 has no fan & is silent. I just hate that it is so darn slow!

A new Mini 10 (model 1012) with its 1.66GHz Atom CPU and a good SSD will be faster than a Mini 9 with its 1.6GHz Atom CPU and a slow SSD (all Mini 9 SSDs are slow compared to SATA SSDs). But it won't be a dramatic difference, and I still wouldn't call it "fast".

That said, I'm almost completely happy with the performance of my 1012 with 2GB of RAM and a mediocre SATA SSD. But it's not a huge improvement over my 9 with 1GB of RAM and a crazy slow SSD (4GB STEC).

You could look at one of the handful of dual core Atom netbooks. See here for one: HP Mini 5103 with dual-core Atom N550 performance review -- Engadget (I don't know if it has a fan). Or you could consider a larger laptop, like the Inspiron M101z (which almost certainly has a fan).

Maybe there is something wrong with my SSD. I have an older supertalent 32 gig - & the stock 16gig drive. It just seems pretty darn slow! Its to the point that after the boot it takes a long time to load IE 6 (stock XP SP2), the whole thing is slow. Maybe i should fix that first?

Well, I still have not done anything yet. Now that there are more dual core netbooks I might jump ship except that everything I read pretty much says that the dual cores arent 'that' much faster in terms of real world use.

There is something wrong with your setup. I just fired up IE 7 on my Dell Mini 9 and it was up in about 5-7 seconds (blank page). I once used a 16gb super talent and it was way too slow. Many seconds of lags between switching applications. I multitask a lot, so my apps are loaded in memory and I just switch between them. I have 2gb of ram and a 32gb stec ssd.

Since the CNBC web stream (called CNBC pro) upgraded 3 days ago to high quality video, I noticed a 1-2 second lag SOMETIMES when I switch to it, and my CPU jumps to over 90% utilization and stays there. The lag does not always happen. The CPU utilization is about 40-50% if the the CNBC web stream is minimized or not displaying the video on the foreground. The difference between the old CNBC and new CNBC is worth it, though.

There is no lag switching between other apps 99% of the time, and most apps start in less than 10 seconds (Excel starts up faster than Yahoo messenger).
