Default intell 5300. Do i need new driver? noob question - 09-01-2010, 04:27 PM

i was looking at upgrading my wifi card to the intell 5300 and was wandering what i needed to do or if i need a new driver? I understand how to physically istall the card but do i need to install a new driver for it or? Thanks for any help and sorry for the noob question

Assuming that you're running Windows, you'll need the Intel driver. I expect a driver's included with newer versions of Windows, but you'll probably be able to find a newer version via Windows update or the Intel site or the disc included with the card or whatever.

If you're running Linux, you already have the driver. If you're running OSX, the card won't ever work (no driver).

Windows 7 includes a driver for the 5300. Supposedly, most current Linux distros do too. You can download Intel's Windows drivers from here.

Or go to the Intel driver update utility which will check your system for the latest chipset and wireless drivers:
