Default two problems - 03-14-2010, 05:14 AM

i have a ten v that sees my wireless network with excellent signal strength, and other wireless networks, but then either loses the network connection immediately after connecting, or after it sees the network it then says no wireless networks are available. Sometimes it connects for a few minutes and then drops. I have quite a few mini 9s and one 1010 that I use for work all day on the same network and none of them have this problem. The 10v does have the 1510 card. It seems to me like either the card or the antenna is defective. It is still under warranty. Is there something software setting it could be? And is the N card backward compatible with a G router?

Another problem with this unit is the display only allows me 1024 by 576. I need a minimum of 800 X 600 to install Cisco vpn. I have a 1010 that I installed vpn on and use successfully. It never occurred to me that I would have a problem with the 1011 given they have the same screen (even if different graphic cards). When I boot the 1011 it tells me the display is at a very low setting and tells me to quick the balloon to fix it, but doing that or accessing the display menu in the control panel doesn't give me any options. If I can't install vpn and get the wireless option working this computer is useless to me.

I'd appreciate any advice I could get.

Ideally, to narrow down the problem, you'd test the wireless card in a different OS to check if it's a software/driver problem. Or swap WiFi cards with one of your other computers. I think the 10v uses a half-height card, unlike the 9. I'm not sure about the old 10 (1010).

And I'm not aware of any N devices that don't also support G.

As for the screen, some 10v's have 1024x576 screens, some have 1024x600. I'd check the screen's EDID. I know how to set super-high resolutions (beyond actual) in Linux, but I don't know the tricks in Windows.

Good luck.

My 10v had the same problem when I got it. I got on dell chat support and they gave me a driver to install that fixed it. I'm not sure what driver it was but im sure they will tell you if you ask.

Edit: This is for your wireless problem, I'm have no clue about your display problem.

There might be something in this thread:How to install Photoshop elements 8 in 10v (screen resolution issue)??. I installed PSE on my 10v using the "edit the install files" approach; but there are other solutions which may be more useful in your situation.
