Default First post, bought Nick white/green 10v, few questions... - 02-14-2010, 02:31 PM

Been a Mac user for a number of years. My youngest son wanted "a little computer" for Christmas but he didnt get it. I decided to get him one for his birthday (March), and I knew you could put OSX on these, which is what I wanted to do.

Anyway, to the questions:

1) why is it that the outlet store only has the Nickelodeon white/slime green units most of the time? Is there any possibility these are brand new and they are just trying to eliminate stock? Once in a while I see a black one, or red, but 99% of the time its the white/green. Not that I care, especially since its for an 8yr old, but just curious.

2) I have OSX 10.5 and 10.6 retail discs. Which is better on the 10v? I would imagine 10.6 since its been optimized to run better.

3) all he does online is watch youtube, play flash games (like webzins and other stuff). Without ever using a netbook, I would imagine it is plenty capable of running this kind of online content without any problems?

Im sure Ill think of a few other things. I have bookmarked a number of pages for installing OSX to go through once the 10v arrives.

Not sure why there's a large number in the outlet store. That's kinda peculiar IMO.

Use 10.6, all the development for NBI/NBM goes to support 10.6, so you might as well be up to date.

As for Flash, the Atom processor can't keep up - Flash is very CPU intensive. Your games might play, or might not. I've heard reports that the 1024x600 resolution prevents some games from starting (expecting 1024x768 minimum.) Youtube is watchable if you stick to SD videos.

I realize its a $250 computer but if if cant stream youtube videos thats pretty sad. I have a phone in my pocket with a 550mhz processor that can play youtube just fine. I would have hoped a 1.6ghz/1gb ram netbook would be able to. And to play simple flash games, I wasnt asking if the thing could play COD2

It's not so much the video can't play on the Mini. I upload videos to YouTube of hockey games all the time, and the original x264-encoded MP4s play just fine on my Mini. The problem is the flash-based player chokes on Mini's Atom.

I have an upgraded 500GB drive, and have a couple dozen movies encoded either in MP4 or XviD, and they play back just fine, full-screen or windowed, using VLC or Windows 7 Media Player.

Maybe Ill just send it back and tell him to ask for something else. I would never have in a million years believed a netbook wasnt even capable of streaming youtube, and I dont mean HD, just the standard SD ones.

Have you tried any of this yet? If not, you may want to fire the thing up and see for yourself before making your judgement.

Honestly, streaming of SD youtube clips is perfectly acceptable on an n270 processor. It's the higher quality clips that cause problems.

You might be interested in Youtube without Flash Auto for Greasemonkey.
It allows YouTube videos to be played with VLC or Mplayer

YouTube videos play much smoother after using this, I don't even use flash anymore.

The way I look at my 10v is it's a macbook at 1/3 of the price with about 75% of the functionality. I expect your son will be disappointed with it running OSX, but might be happy with it on Windows 7.
