Default Dell sent me a Romanian spec machine, what next? - 02-11-2010, 04:54 PM

Hello to the forum, I hope my first post is in the right place?
I took advantage of the outlet offer for free delivery and bought a mini Inspiron 1011, £174 total and Windows 7, the end of January, it turned up Monday
It looks brand new and untouched, perfect?
Just one problem, it's a Romanian spec machine complete with US key board and euro power adaptor. I've managed to power it up using another 19v power supply and it all works well.
I contacted Dell and told them but nothings happened. It's been four days now. Will they exchange? BTW, I've been to the outlet site and they only have two machines, dented or scratched.
I'm reluctant to give this back, what should I do?

I'm confused. Since you gave the price in pounds, I assume you are in the UK. Does the European power plug not work there? (Is it grounded or not?) Maybe an adapter is all you need.

The US keyboard may or may not be an issue for you. Did they load a Romanian version of Windows?

Sorry, yes I am in the uk. I found this site and presumed it to be from the UK.
Our adaptor/plugs have 3 pins. The euro type supplied is useless here.
Also the keyboard keys don't match up when I select UK layout.
I selected English UK during set-up so up and running with no problems.
I've just updated the pad drivers which have improved use.
Will Dell collect and re-supply or will they give a refund.

Yes, this site is hosted in the UK but has members from around the world.

Since you bought an outlet model, I'd guess that they'd refund your money if you wanted to return it.

If you're happy to keep it then ask Dell support to send you a UK keyboard - it is easy to replace - just three screws. They can also send you a UK power adapter while they are at it. Some of my outlet laptops have come from Romania (there is normally a sticker underneath with the country) but they have always been supplied with UK keyboard and power adapter.

I had the same problem (brought from UK outlet site), so I called Dell and they said they could send a replacement power adapter (european does work with a shaver adapter) and setup guide, but would NOT send out a keyboard. So I have arranged for a refund. I then ordered another hoping the first incident was an accident.

Guess what the new one is a Romanian spec as well. I spoke to them again and they said they would send me a power adapter and refund me £17.00 for the trouble, so I think I will settle for that. So thats £157 in total for a new 10v with Bluetoothl. Not ideal but its a good price.

@sundaytimes... Hi, and welcome to the forum!

As you are (presumably) based in, and ordered from the UK, unless it was specifically and clearly specified at the time of ordering, I would have thought that Dell were legally obliged to supply you with a model with a UK keyboard... or at the very least to send you a replacement keyboard.

I am no legal expect, but it sounds to me like mis-selling, to say the least!

I guess that some of those things can be expected when you buy from the outlet...I personally would never buy anything there but to each their own I guess, if you are strapped for cash or whatever...I would rather just pay the price and get what I want...its kinda like buying a used car and then complaining that the ashtray has been used or that the odometer is not at zero...most of those outlet items are either orders that were cancelled or refurbs, I think the Dell just wants to get rid of that stuff to relive their inventory and could care less whether that customer gets what they want or not..just my 0.02..

Probably why you bought the cheapest mini 10 and then spent a fortune upgrading it to the machine you couldn't afford in the first place?

I think Dell made a mistake listing 500 machines not UK spec.
I want to keep mine, it doesn't have a sticker saying refurbished like others I've seen. It looks brand new.

I will keep trying to make contact and resolve my issues but until the reply there's not a lot I can do?
