Default No Ubuntu option from dell - Does it matter? (Hackintosh a Dell Mini 10v) - 01-29-2010, 09:34 AM

Hi I'm trying to follow the Hackintosh Dell Mini 10v guide and it says I need the operating system to be Ubuntu but when trying to personalise on the Dell website the option is not offered, only Windows 7 is available.

Does this matter or can I can follow the guide and install Snow Leopard?

Regards,
Rob

Hey Rob,

The Ubuntu models are on Dell's website. Browse to www.dell.com then mouse over "For Home" and click Laptops/Minis on the drop down menu that appears. On the screen that loads, you can click the checkbox next to 'Mini Netbooks' on the left side of the screen and you will see multiple options including Mini 10v (Ubuntu).

That being said, you don't need Ubuntu to hackintosh. I got my 10v with XP and set it up with OSX last night. I used an external DVD drive and it worked great. Which guide are you looking at? You might be able to use it, but there are multiple options to get SL setup on the 10v. Some of them are specific to which OS you are using to Prep the flash drives (if you are using flash drives). I found it to be a little confusing sorting through the guides on this site, but the people here are very helpful.

The guide I used was Mechdrew's NetbookInstaller 2: USB Mac Installation via Any Operating System

Thanks,
Sean

Edit: not sure where you are located, its possible Dell offers the ubuntu option here in the states and not where you are currently located.

If you have access to another computer to make the bootable USB drive it doesn't matter what OS you get on the Mini. You will be formatting it hard drive with the OS anyway to install OSX.

Thanks very much for the quick and helpful replies Nycromes and murdoch158, I think there is another UK version of the Dell site I was using which wouldn't let me choose Ubuntu, anyway thanks for clearing the up for me.

I'm following this guide: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dell...d-netbook.html

Just to clarify though they say that a:
  • "Retail copy of OS X 10.6" is required but that's not possible is it because 10.6 is an upgrade (shown at Amazon.com)
  • Doesn't he mean a "Retail copy of OS X 10.5" (shown at Amazon.com) like in the gudie you linked
It's pretty important that I clear that up because the price difference on them is big.

If it is Snow Leopard wheich you are after, then the first link you quoted (which is actually to Amazon.co.uk) should be fine.

I have recently purchased one of these, and (unless I have missed something somewhere) I can't actually see the word 'upgrade' either in the item description, or indeed on the product itself.

... and yes, (before anyone asks!) the box does contain a physical DVD, and not just a license.

Mini 10v - Product (RED) - BIOS A06 - Ubuntu 11.04 - 2GB RAM - 60 GB OCZ Vertex SSD - Bluetooth - Intel 6205 Wi-Fi - WWAN

Blimey Montala you just saved me about £180 ($287), I just thought that for that price for an operating system it had to be an upgrade.

Thank you very much! (and much appreciated for the quick reply)

Rob
