Default Which to buy? Mini 10 vs Mini 10v ??? - 01-20-2010, 06:15 AM

Hey guys Im looking to buy a dell mini off dells outlet refurb site. keeping it below the <$300 range.

I would love a netbook with 6 cell battery,
for browsing the web, youtube, hulu. OfficeXP etc.... I would also like to have the HDMI input but if it lacks performance then forget it.

SO Which one is the best to get? Damn im confused... The Mini 10 HDMI models have the Z530 and the 10v have the N280 - seems like the N280 or N270?, 1gb, 160 HD 6 cell would be the best one..? I have no clue because the hdmi Is what I would want, but if it makes it weaker i'd rather get the N280.. But they say the Z530 runs cooler - and the N280 runs hotter and theres not the much difference performance wise ? any advice on that? I want a netbook for playing back videos - if it plays HD vids thats great too but it doesn't have too no biggie.... HELP!! Which one is the right netbook for me so I can pull the trigger???

THANKS

Neither one is really good at playing HD video. Standard video either should do. If the choice is between the old Mini 10 (1010) and the 10v (1011), I'd probably go with the 1011 because it can have RAM added to it. You may want to consider the new 1012 model.

Id go with the 10v, ive had mine for a while now and i have no problems with it at all. Sure it only has VGA out but i still use it a lot and i dont see the big difference between my VGA out and my friends HDMI. If anything his is more of a hassle to use just because a lot of our tvs dont have open HDMI. As holmes4 said there is no point in trying to use HD vid on either one of these mostly because it would lag like crazy. True the N series do run hotter when sitting in your lap with nothing inbetween but either way i dnt notice it a lot. The only downside is that when you upgrade to 2gb of ram (if you did) it would run even hotter which from my friends experiances hasnt been very good. For me ive kept 1gb partially becaise i never feel up to having to install the 2gb and i dnt want it to run hotter but it runs fine, im quadbooting my 10v with Snow Leo OSX, Windows 7, Ubuntu Netbook Remix, and jolicloud OS and they all work flawlessly. If you have any tother questions or concerns feel free to PM me

Do you wish to run OS X on it? Hulu doesn't work too well on OS X.. ;(

Im kinda in the same boat as the orignal poster... Sorta =]

Im plannin on throwin the newest ubuntu or maybe even moblin when its finished. Ive heard that the n280 processor runs smoother with said OS's. Any thoughts on that? What about the new 1012? How does that handle linux based mess?

Not trying to thread jack, just lookin to learn =]

Whenever i first got a mini 10v i had the N270 and it worked alright with every type of OS (i tried just about everything) i ended up selling my 10v and got a new one with the N280, bluetooth, etc.. and with linux it runs very very nice. Ive never had any problems and its quite a bit faster than my old 10v. Havent tested out the 1012 yet but from my experiance with the 10v you cant go wrong.
