Default 10v SSD type?? - 01-15-2010, 11:30 PM

I've got a 10v with 16gb SSD that I'm thinking of selling. Does anyone know what type of drive Dell sold with the 10v as an option? I've no idea, and havn't had the machine open yet to find out.

2.5" SATA

I think it's made by Samsung. Check Device Manager.

EDIT: I see that your signature states "Ubuntu 9.10". In a terminal, run "sudo lshw -C disk" to "list hardware", but limit display to "disk" devices. All the info you could want should be there.

What was the full product details of that OCZ?

I've been spending hours researching SSD's. Seriously looking at this device that runs off the Indilinx controller which that OCZ you're looking at might run off too:

::YoYo Tech::

About £147. Cheaper than the OCZ's I've priced. Was looking at the Kingston V+ as that doesn't use the JMicron controller that the "V" series does. The V+ comes in below £140 online, but I don't think it has a "wiper" utility.

Havn't decided upon which to buy yet but I'm leaning towards Indilinx at the moment. The Intel drives are just that little bit out of my budget.

I have tried 2 -SSDs in my Mini 10v:

1. Apple (rebranded Samsung) 128Gb
2. OCZ Vertex 60Gb

The Apple SSD is on the slow side (90Mb Read, 70Mb write)
The OCZ is MUCH faster (~200 Read, ~100 write)

Both worked well in the 10V, the Apple SSD was much better than the HDD (no benchmarks, strictly "feel".

The OCZ is MUCH faster than the Apple! Really snappy!

Battery life on the Apple is slightly better (currrent draw is .2A, vs .35A on the OCZ) by about 25min on a 6 cell.

Boot time is still much slower than my Mini 9 was.

Your results may vary....

Default Benchmarks... - 01-29-2010, 07:05 PM

I have not benchmarked it...point me to what you want to use (Snow Leopard) and I will benchmark it for you.

FWIW I have the kingston v-series 64G in my mac mini. I haven't tried any benchmarks but the perceived performance is very good. This drive has a revised version of the "bad" jmicron controller that anandtech panned.

I am sure that the random write performance of the kingston is not great, but in practice i don't notice it, and i surely notice the fast boot and application launch times.

I see they now have a v+-series that is replacing the v-series. yikes; it's $200 at newegg for a 64GB, which doesn't compare favorably with the intel 80G.

Has anyone with the samsung/dell drive done a random-write benchmark? More importantly, how is the perceived performance? do you run into any of the "stalls" described in the anandtech article?
