Default Dell Mini 10v lid / cover replacement - 12-16-2009, 02:15 AM

I recently dropped my Dell Mini 10v and damaged (cracked) the top right corner of the lid (not the actually LCD panel), and side body (base frame, near the headphone jack) is there any where I can order spare parts?

I tried calling Dell, but they don't sell just the parts alone, however I could get it replaced by paying $199+tax to be sent to a service depot.

The side body damage isn't too bad, but the lid is embarrassing; I did some research, and saw that there are hard cover shells on eBay that would probably cover the cosmetic damages. But would really like a new lid (a good reason to experiment with a funky customized lid or try to attempt touch screen mod if there is a guide out there); not interesting in vinyl skins or super glue techniques.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm not sure who you spoke to, but practically all of the people who work in consumer tech support &/or consumer sales are morons.

We/Dell do sell these components as spare parts. So from your image it looks like the top back cover (where the dell logo is) is damaged.. and I can't make out the base damaged area... would that be the palmrest, or the bottom plastics?

The 5 digit/alphanumerical at the beginning is the part number.

So here they are.. Dell Part Numbers you'd need to tell someone with some intelligence that you need:

Top back cover - Y110P - LCD Back Cover, IMR, Black, w/WLAN, 1011 (including Sponge & Foil) ASSY,CVR,BK,WLAN,OBSD-BLK,1011

For the palmrest I can't tell from the image which of the 3 possible parts would be for your system... perhaps if I had your service tag I could look it up, but otherwise its difficult to guess since the parts descriptions can be quite cumbersome

Palmrest - R944P - Palmrest Cover with touch pad & FPC cable, Silver IMR, 1011 - ASSY,PLMRST,PLSTC,IMR,SLVR1011
T579P - Palmrest Bracket, W/Power button board & Speaker & Thermal Pad x2, 1011 - ASSY,CHAS,PLMRST,PLSTC,1011
X604K- Palmrest Cover with touch pad - ASSY,PLMRST,PLSTC,IMR,SLVR1010

Bottom Plastics - X732R - Bottom Base Assembly (including 2 battery latchs), 1011 - ASSY,CVR,BTM,1011

You can tell them this: "look up any part in IDD, click on the part description, then for the 7 digit SKU box, replace that with the 5 digit one (provided above), wait, because IDD is typically slow, and it will pull up that part, as a spare part"

I don't work tomorrow, or else I could look them up for you and tell you how much the parts would cost. If you can wait until Sunday then I can look them up, unless you get someone to do it before then.

Hope that helps.

you could search ebay, I saw the lid part for around 20-30 dollars before. Just search for keywords and eventually you should come across one

ebay, but to take the screen assembly off and replace the cover, you have to take the whole computer apart (i just did it today).

You have to take the motherboard and everything else out in order to get the antenna wires out that run from the wireless card-through the computer-into the top of the screen.

ehh I fix computers for a hobby, so taking apart a laptop isn't an issue. I just want some OEM parts to order to mess around with... and I'll pay a premium to avoid ebay at all costs =D

Mini10v Parts

btw, if I haven't mentioned it before.. these part numbers are only good to dell employees.. ie: you'll need our help inorder to get any use out of them. All the SKU's on dell.com go off of 7 digit part numbers... the 5 digit ones I always list can only be looked up by a dell rep... of course I'm happy to do that if needed for a quote or something.. also, while I can create quotes.. I am in no fashion pushing sales in any way... I get no commission in sales that are tied to my name.. nor do I want such things.. with commission comes quota's.. lol, no thanks, I'll stick with Tech Support.. anyway.. on with it.

Because all of these part numbers are always going to yield a "spare part", they're typically cheaper than what you'd be able to buy straight off dell.com or where ever.

Hope that helps.

Aerax:

Your generosity and willingness to help does shine some light and give is a fresh perspective on Dell Support. I'm sure you have read countless anecdotals on the poor support some have received from your counterparts. On a side note, everyone should be reminded that Aerax is doing us a favor...so don't overdo it and don't get the guy in trouble!

Again thanks!
