Default Dell warranty on slightly used 10v? - 12-03-2009, 04:48 PM

I just found a slightly used 10v locally I am thinking of buying, someone who got it as a gift and didn't like it.

Does anyone know what the Dell warranty situation would be on such a machine? I assume the warranty would be transferrable, but that I would have to be able to prove when it was bought. But this might be tricky, if it was originally a gift. Or is there some way Dell can tell from records or the machine itself when it was bought?

Every Dell computer has a unique Service Tag, which is a sort of serial number. It is a seven digit alpha/numeric set of characters, which will be printed on a label on the underside of the Netbook.

From this Dell can tell the exact configuration it was originally shipped with, the date of manufacture, and also the original purchaser.

I can't see why the warranty shouldn't be transferable, but I am not an expert on this sort of thing, so others may be able give you better advice.

If it comes down to it, just tell Dell you got it as a gift, or give them the original purchasers name.

my experience and impression is they are just interested in the tag number. I agree, you can always say it was a family gift

You can also transfer the warranty using this form:

Well found!

I would imagine they have a similar form for other countries also, as I am not sure if the OP is in the U.S.A. or not.

Good point. I'm sure there is one for every country. I found this one very easily just by typing "Dell warranty transfer form" into Google, so they shouldn't be hard to find.
