Default DownGrade A06 Using WinPlash On Windows - 12-02-2009, 04:04 AM

hey

i have been reading through some threads and found this written by "ldoogy" and wanted to know if any one has tried it and if so did it work Thanks

"I actually have a far easier way of doing this, assuming you have Windows installed. Basically, you download the Windows A05 installer from Dell (that appears to be the only version they have for A05).

You then run it on Windows (I'm assuming you still have a working Windows setup on the Mini 10v). That program decompresses the Windows BIOS installer program into C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\WINPHLASH, and immediately launches it. Open the file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\WINPHLASH\PHLASH.INI in notepad. In it you'll find the second line that says "Advanced=0". Change that to "Advanced=1", save, and close notepad.

Now launch WinPhlash.exe from that same directory (if it's already running, close it). Click the button "Advanced Settings", and in it, uncheck the box for "Flash only if BIOS version is newer than system". You can now go ahead and click Flash BIOS -- it'll downgrade your BIOS from A06 to A05 right there in Windows, no DOS, USB sticks, or other hassles. Worked perfectly for me.

Cheers,
-- ldoogy."

Yes!

I used this to downgrade straight from A06 to A05. Worked perfectly!

On the Dell.com website, I found three downloads for A05:
- Dell Server System BIOS, A05
- PowerEdge 6100 A05 FlashBIOS
- A05 BIOS for the PowerEdge 2200 Server
Which one is relevant ?
The Webpage adddress is: Dell - Search - All Dell.com
Thank you!

None of those. You want this one.

Oh thanks! I am a bit wary though: there are posts elsewhere that you can actually damage (brick?) your computer from running the BIOS downgrading on Windows.
What is your opinion on this?

My opinion is that since it has happened to some (not to me), I usually recommend using the DOS method from a bootable USB key. If you do choose the Windows method, just be patient and wait for it to finish. It may appear hung for quite a while (3-5 minutes, perhaps.)

I know that for the Mini 9, user somms has provided a utility that builds a bootable USB flash drive for the purpose, but I have not seen one for other models.

Thank you. I think I will be going the "hard" way removing the Dell Mini 10v's hard disk and not downgrading the A06 BIOS (jacques1171's Guide).

When reading though my windows 7 experience with modded bios, mose modders say to flash in dos, it is the most safe. I recently downgraded my a06 bios to a04 with this guide :
Downgrade your Mini 10v BIOS to A04 (Requires Windows)
it only requires a dos startup disk you can make, drag and drop the bios file and run 'bois name".exe/forceit/forcetype..stand back (mine took about a minute) and listen to the annoying beeping...stay away from windows to up/downgrade, dos is safer..and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE POWER CABLE PLUGGED IN
