Default Different RAM speed for N280 vs. N270? - 11-29-2009, 06:38 AM

Given the FSB speed difference between the N270 and the N280 (667 Mhz vs 533) Does that affect the speed of the RAM I should get? I should match the FSB speed, right?

No, it makes no difference. Just get whatever is cheapest.

cheapest is fine but actually your RAM should be at least the speed of your CPU

Actually I have the N280 (667MHz FSB), and 667MHz DDR2, but the Memory is only running @ 533MHz... The memory is:

CORSAIR VSA2GSDS667D2 2GB DDR2 SODIMM 200-Pin Notebook Memory Retail

Cas latency =5
Registered,
Unbuffered

Not sure why it would only run asynchronously at 533MHz on a 667MHz FSB?

Oh and I got this this past summer for $12 from ZipZoomFly (after $20 MIR)

Currently $34 after $20 MIR ( http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...43&prodlist=cj

I would stick to the N270 because the RAM will still run at 533MHz under both CPUs. Also, the added .06 GHz speed on the N280 is not worth the extra money (in my opinion).

Actually the 2.5 multiplier in the N280, alone is enough to justify the $25 extra dollars...

This compared to the 3.125 multiplier should save energy, and heat generation (although I could be wrong)

As discussed, this limitation is due to the intel chipset implementation.

I suppose it's purely subjective but I've got both cpus with faster memory in the 280 and it just feels faster than my 270 equipped machines. I put 2 gig upgrades in all, 533 in the 270s and 800 (got a good deal) in the 280s.

I have never taken the time to do any real tests but it seems like it takes the 270s longer to initially boot up and to load large programs.
