Default Will Snow Leopard fit on the 8gb SSD? - 11-10-2009, 08:41 PM

Hey guys! Just joined My Dell Mini, I've been reading for a few weeks and everyone seems really helpful. I'm about to order a Refurb Dell Mini 10v for £70 cheaper than the new price. But...

I'd rather not spend more money unless I have to. The lowest capacity SSD I can find is 32gb and that's around £70/80.

So is 8gb big enough to install Snow Leopard, and how much space will I be left with? I don't plan on installing Windows or Linux on it. Could I just buy a 8gb / 16gb SD card to store any big files or programs on?

Thanks in advance =)!

Edit: Or alternatively I could buy a cheaper HDD to use. Will this hit my performance much?

You can, but it's a wedge to get it there, and then you've got to hassle with putting everything else on another drive.

It's a netbook, so IMHO the SSD is more for stability than for performance (performance being limited by the atom processor and the limited RAM).

I was at the same decision you are at and I went for the bigger standard, platter drive. Oh, so much cheaper, and oh, so much more room (even the 120gb will seem palatial compared to the 8). In the states, the 120gb is the el cheapo configuration, so that should save you some moola if it's available there.

Ah thanks. Looks like I should go with the HDD then. If it works fine, then I don't mind. But you say that the SSD is for stability - what do you mean?

Thanks

You can jiggle it while it's on, drop it, and otherwise give it all sorts of travel-related abuse that a platter drive wouldn't take to so well.

Default Works fine on a mini 9 - 11-30-2009, 02:47 PM

8Gb works fine on a Mini 9. You will need to modify the OSInstall.mpkg to allow you to deselect a couple of additional packages to get it on there (voices and Oxford dictionary for example). You should be able to find a guide to get you through that.
