Default RAM Upgrade more expensive than Mini 9s? - 11-06-2009, 10:29 AM

I was able to get my 2GB RAM upgrade for my Mini 9 for around £15 from Crucial, but now I've looked at various sites and I can't see a 10v RAM Chip for less than 30!

Cheapest I did find was once again Crucial:

I don't know about the UK, but RAM prices in the US have gone up over the last year.

It's not just the last year, it's the last 3 months.

The current price for either a 10v or Mini9 2 gig memory chip is $49.99US. I paid $47.98 for my 10v memory on Oct 10th and $27.99 for my Mini9 memory on July 31.

NOTE: All prices from Crucial.com.

Yeah, prices have shot up it seems. When I put 2 GB in my Mini 9, it was around $20. I think when I did it for my first 10v, it was in the upper $20's. For this one, I think it was around $35. Crazy..

I bought a couple of 2GB sticks last week for £17.99 from Play.com - currently their cheapest is £25.99 so keep an eye on the website as cheap ram comes and goes.

7dayshop have some on offer for £17.99 at the moment:

The ones from "7dayshop" are now showing as 'On Order', so personally I would be a bit wary of placing as order with them just at the moment.

As you say I just can't believe the way there have increased in price recently.

However, if anyone (in the UK) is anxious to 'upgrade' their Mini 10v, and is interested in a brand new stick, then please do drop me a PM, as I had to split a Kingston Hyper-X pack recently, and might just be able to help!

Regardless of the soft limits, I wonder if anyone has put a 3GB or 4GB stick in and run it anyway. Yes they make 3GB sticks. I'm thinking it's a matter of time before a BIOS upgrade supports it. Even so, Windows 7 works around hardware limitations on standard systems so I would think it would make sense to put it in anyway, if it will function.
Anyone tried it, just for kicks?

Someone did months ago. The Mini's chipset will not recognize a 4GB SODIMM, and will not POST.
