Default 7200rpm worth it? SSD not possible - 10-21-2009, 09:14 PM

I live in South Africa, and the SSD drives are ridiculously overpriced.

I'd like my 10v to be a little snappier in OS X. I have upgraded to 2GB Ram, will it be worth it if I upgrade the hdd to a 7200rpm drive?

Will I notice the difference if I use the 10v mainly for internet and word processing.

If anyone here has 7200rpm drives in their mini i'd appreciate your input.

Many thanks
Matt

I just timed a 10v running 10.6.1 (installed with the latest bootloader) with 2gb and a WD Scorpio black (7200) - 1:10 from the press of the on-button to a usable desktop, including the 5-second "press any key to choose your boot option" in the chameleon boot loader. Hope that can give you some sort of a benchmark.

hotrodminis: Does the 7200 feel at all faster at launching app's etc compared to a stock 5400 drive?

My boot not far off of that

---------- Post added at 12:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 AM ----------

10.6.1 stock 160GB 5400rpm hdd, from pressing on button to a usable desktop (including the 5 second boot loader screen)

1:13 seconds.

So boot time is almost identical. Its mainly app launching etc that I am concerned about - firefox, microsoft office applications

App launching time will be slightly faster to moderately faster, depending on how heavily you are multi-tasking. The stock 160GB 5400RPM is actually a very fast drive - Dell's ship with the WD Scorpio Blue, if I remember correctly. This drive is faster than many 7200RPM laptop drives.

My 10v came with a Seagate Momentus 160GB 5400rpm drive ST9160314AS Momentus 5400.6 SATA 3Gb/s 160-GB Hard Drive | Seagate

So the WD Scorpio Black 7200 drives outperform the current one I have? I just don't want to spend like R600 ($80) if I wont notice any difference.

I would not use such a fast drive because it needs more power and makes the Netbook warmer. May you will have in Afrika then more Problems with temperature Issues. Also the Laptop is not performat enough to load the data faster as from a 5400 rpm drive. So wait until the price for flash will drop and then you can switch.

Greetings from the Black Forrest.

I did the upgrade in RAM and the HD at the same time. It felt more responsive after (as it should), but I don't know if it's the RAM or HD.

SSDs are nice - they feel more responsive (maybe it's just the lighter wallet talking ). More importantly, they'll run cooler (with that 2gb, you'll want to keep a lid on heat as much as possible).

The 7200 rpm drives are faster (seat of the pants test), but they do consume more power, and they spin faster. Spinning faster generally means a little noisier. I put a WD Scorpio Black in mine, and it was too noisy and caused too much vibration. When I got my new one, I put a WD Scorpio Blue in, and much much much better..

I installed a 500gb Blue and it makes no noise, no vibration.
