Default Should the hard drive be spinning durring sleep? - 10-13-2009, 04:35 PM

So I just got OS X 10.6.1 running on my 10v (N280, 160 HD, 0.8.3 RC3) and I noticed that I can still hear the hard drive spinning (very high pitched noise) while in sleep. I also notice that if left in sleep it will significantly drain the battery. 1 or 2 hours less after in sleep mode last night. I am the kind of person that never shuts down my computer, is this normal, or is there something I still need to do?

No. If it's truly sleeping, the drive shouldn't be spinning. I put a 7200rpm drive in mine that you can definitely hear when it's not sleeping, but when it's asleep, it isn't spinning.

Is the power LED flashing to indicate that it is?

Default not sure - 10-13-2009, 05:01 PM

The LED on the front of the computer dims/blinks and the screen is off. The sound of the HD (I assume it is the HD) changes to a more high pitch. Could it be somthing else that is making the noise? When in sleep mode shouldn't the HD be stopped completly?

I am having the same problem, I recently installed 10.6.1 with RC3 and while sleep looks like it is sleeping (black screen & blinking LED), it isn't.

I too can here the HD spinning. This is quite annoying as I want to be able to put my mini into sleep instead of constantly shutting down.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like it could be an issue with 10.6.1.. If you haven't already, I'd check the 0.8.3 RC3 thread and see if there are any other reports.

Ok, just ran NBI again and fixed disc permissions again. And all is well with the sleep now. No spinning hard drive during sleep! :P

Not sure about the battery draining issues will test it later on.

My mini spec;

500gb hd
2gb ram
OS X SL 10.6.1
Both NBM and NBI installed. RC3.

No faint high pitched noise comming from the HD during sleep? Was there a reason why you re-installed RC3?

---------- Post added at 06:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:13 PM ----------

Reinstalled RC3 still no sound at all until I compied over the new verbhelper file. Is RC3 installing fully? I repaired disk permissions and got a note that said the personal folder had been changed and would not be repaired. Is this normal? Still have HD high pitch noise during sleep. OSX will only fully boot after power cycle. If I shut down the computer it will not boot next time I try and start it, I have to power cycle once before it will boot. Not a huge issue, but still.....do you have this issue with your computer?

Do you have a 10v or a 9?

Ok, yes there is a very faint high pitched sound. Couldn't here it before cos of the tv.

I don't know why i re-installed it, just was recommended to re-run it to fix the audio after sleep and it seemed to work.

What bios version are you using? I'm on AO6, so if you're the same it may well be that.

I hope there's an explanation/fix for this. Let me know if you find a way

Interesting about the power cycle. I have a problem; if i don't start up in the same state as i previously shut down (i.e with or without power cord in) then startup will fail the first time. Then need to restart it and it'll be fine.

No idea about the folder/disk permissions. It seems it's pretty sketchy computer to computer.

We'll have to wait for someone with a little bit more know-how to chip in and help us

I have a 10v check sig.
