Did you get a chance to jump on the Windows 7 trials? I believe the Win 7 RC will last you til Aug 2010 on the license.
Windows 7 works very nicely and installs pretty easily off of a 4GB USB key.
Also I highly recommend the 2GB upgrade. Best $20+ spent for your Mini.
I used the following guide to make the USB key.
You have to use the 2.0.6 version of HP USB Disk storage tool.

You make a pretty good argument for using linux. I guess my concern is that I won't want to take them time to make it worthwhile. Let's put it this way. If I keep XP all I'll need to do is install open office and other apps as they come up. What extra steps would I be looking at (and beneficial steps I'm sure) in order to have a great linux system?
Also, someone I know recommended I install using Wubi to try it out. Would you support this as a way to decide?

also, regarding the ram. I bought a refurb and didn't get one with the ram upgrade. Actually, I swear when I looked at configuring a new one that wasn't even an option...
Any idea how long it takes to install RAM on a mini10v? Any special tools required?

If you're still interested in Linux, I think the best way for a Windows power user to learn Linux might be by jumping in the deep end. Install Linux as the only OS, and force yourself to use it. Then you can't easily retreat to Windows when your Linux GUI breaks because you screwed something up while compiling a newer version of a graphics driver.
Make sure you can reinstall Windows if you change your mind in the end.
Good luck with whatever you do.
