Default Custom Chassis - 10-01-2009, 02:09 AM

Let's be honest, the mini 10v is ugly, and there's a lot of bad design decisions that went into the computer. I want to make a custom chassis for my mini 10v just for the heck of it. Anyone got any suggestions on where to start?

I'm not crazy. I just want to have some fun and learn something new.

hmm... maybe the milling machine and long sheet of aluminum, perhaps? Or how about the CNC machine and start cracking on your version of CAD? Or you could carve out a nice chassis out of hardy timber?

I was actually contemplating making a carbon fiber lid for my 10v. My plan of attack was to use my existing lid to make a mold, then replicate using some CF and resin. Should end up lighter and stronger than the original plastic piece, and if you use a transparent resin the CF weave would be visible and damn sexy looking!

Is it _that_ ugly? I think it's quite tidy, it's hard to imagine much that the average punter could modify that would improve its aesthetics, but if you want somewhere to start, get drawing. Then get CADing. Then make a model. Well, you can work it out.

Honestly?

I do not think the Mini 10v is that bad... I know it is not as clean and sleek as a real Mac, but still.

If you could make it look like a mini aluminum MPB that would be bad azz

i prefer the looks of the 10v compared to other netbooks! Perhaps not so much the bulbous 6 cell battery but the rest is nice And this is coming from a guy who uses a MacBook Pro at uni (not when i get my 10v!) and a mac mini as a desktop

I agree... having checked out quite a few other Netbooks first, I personally think that the Mini 10v is one of the best looking ones around.

... and now that I have completely dis-assembled it to increase the RAM, I am even more impressed with the detail of the internal design... it is not that an expensive a product after all.

I would have thought that for an 'end user' to try and design a replacement professional looking chasis, would be a very tricky, and time consuming, task!

Rather you than me!

I don't think the 10v is horrible, but I think it needs room for a fan.. Although, I can live with the slight noise generated by it, I know many can't stand it.
