Default Disabled options in BIOS? - 08-25-2009, 12:03 AM

Hi all.

I came across a very strange problem with my mini 10v. In the advanced tab of the BIOS, all the options are greyed out (and unchangeable) except for speedstep and onboard lan control. I also can't set a password or change the boot order. Other than this everything works just fine. I also tried downgrading from the A06 BIOS to A04, but it didnt help. Any ideas?

Mine's also A06 but don't have that problem. Think you need to contact Dell to sort out...

I'm on the final stage of my set-up of OS X, but cannot change the default boot options (currently set to USB).

I contacted Dell and they said it's on the motherboard. The only repair is to send back to Dell. I'll start a new thread on what I need to do in order to prepare my Hackintosh for it's trip back to Dell.

Is the motherboard accessible? Would reseating the motherboard accomplish this?

The motherboard itself is an integral part of your Mini, and is screwed into the main chasis, as it were, so I don't think it can be reseated as such.

I am not sure whether or not the actual BIOS is a plug in chip, or soldered directly onto the motherboard... someone else can probably clarify this point.

Out of interest is it a fairly new 'machine'? If you have 'hackintoshed' it, I guess you had to 'downgrade' the BIOS first... can you recall if you could acess the advanced options before you did this, as that could possibly have caused the problem?

Hope you manage get it all sorted out OK anyway.

I had a working hackintosh, but decided to do the dual boot with Win 7. I upgraded the bios in Win 7 to A04. Shortly after that, I noticed that I wasn't able to access options in the BIOS. It would say that a User Password was set, but I could enable/disable or even enter a password. I created a USB to flash the bios, figuring it might undo whatever I had done. No luck. I finally gave in and called Dell.

They recommended entering a password, but there was no where to enter said password. I told them I didn't have an OS on the machine at the time (although I did have OS X installed).

After much adjusting camera angle and focus, here's a shot of my Mini 10 BIOS "Advanced" screen.

BIOS chip is soldered on to the motherboard Dell will replace the motherboard, this is what happens when a BIOS downgrade is not entirely complete (you wont even know if all the BIOS info was written) that is why I put a guide together on how to install OSX without downgrading BIOS.

Dell Mini 9 / 2 GB Ram / 16 GB RunCore / Bluetooth / A05 BIOS / OSX 10.6.1
Dell Mini 10 / 2GB Ram / 320 GB Hard Drive / Bluetooth / A06 BIOS / OSX 10.6.1
Acer Apire One 150 / 1.5 GB Ram / 120 GB Hard Drive / OSX 10.6.1
Apple Intel Imac / 2GHz Core Duo / 2GB Ram / 1 TB Hard drive / OSX 10.6.1 and Windows 7
Apple Intel Mac Mini / 2GHz Core 2 Duo / 4GB Ram / 500 GB Hard Drive / OSX 10.6.1
Apple MacPro / 2.93GHz 8 Core / 16GB Ram / 2 TB Hard Drive / OSX 10.6.1
