I swap the wireless card(1510) on dell mini10v with a dell 1397 card and it didn't make a slight difference. I swap the card with my studio, and well... it's the crappy broadcom wireless card. Both the 1510 & 1397 has a very weak G transfer signal (probably b too).
NOTE:1515 has a atheros chipset, very good for g but bad for N... Never really a balance.
I talk to dell technical support and have them remote my computer... and they did crazy crap like change my speed to 11mbps from 54mbps .. and change the channel to 11. They are sending me a new 1510 wireless card to replace my mini with. I knew that wasn't going to solve my problem so I had to change my setup completely... Here's what I did.
I know that the both the N signal works beautiful on both the computers at 135mbps. The mini 1510 works at 270mbps while the dell studio 1515 stutters at 135mbps (even though windows says it connects at 300mbps?!?!, dd-wrt firmware states the true speed) FIX: atheros_v184.108.40.2069_v1.26 latest driver will allow it to connect @ 270mbps. (even states 270) Athough the router varies from 270 to 135... but that's better than just 135.
NOTE: Here's something cool, the router dumbs itself down to the slowest cilent speed... that sucks. but I can see why for stablity purposes.
1TB Seagate Freeagent HD -> wL-520GU Tomato custom <- Netager WNDR3300 DD-wRT Custom
I just use my Netgear router as a N-Connection and a G... since it's dual band. I hate DD-WRT firmware cause their QoS sucks so I connect to my Tomato as the main DHCP and main gateway. Tomato has a beautiful QoS system, I can torrent my legal files (Ubuntu? Windows beta and other legal.. stuff) while playing Dota warcraft having <100 ping or playing BF2. <100ping or wow <100 ping.. u get the idea.
Here's the lesson:
Dell wireless card 1510 & 1397 Broadcom
-G connection has a horrible network transfer speed.
+Great N Connection (Just 1510, 1397 doesn't support N)
Dell wireless 1515 Atheros
-Horrible N connection defaults router back to 135mbps, but can be fix with modded atheros firmware.
+Great G connection and network transfer
