Default Ubuntu - 9.04 standard or Netbook Remix? - 07-23-2009, 07:26 AM

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but it's definitely related to my 10v!

The standard install of Ubuntu 8.04 that arrived with my lovely 10v is starting to have problems. They began with the familiar update clog where one of the packages is missing a newline or something, so this has halted any subsequent updates. Now it inexplicably hangs completely whenever I try to connect to a new wireless network, the audio doesn't work, it won't mount USB drives...

Anyway, I've happily used Ubuntu 9.04 before on other laptops and the standard installation seemed to work fine. Should I just go for that or is there anything special about Netbook Remix that would be sleeker / faster / less energy hungry in this instance?

Again, sorry if I'm asking in the wrong place, if someone could point me to the right area I'd appreciate it!

GO 9.04 NOW!!!

Luckily you have the 10v, otherwise you'll be ****ed for life with the 8.04 until new drivers come out for the gma 500.

9.04's not in doubt - just wondering whether to go for the "Netbook Remix" version...

You can go either way and if you decide to change, you don't have to reinstall. The "Netbook Remix" is not actually a separate Ubuntu distribution - it's plain vanilla 9.04 with an interface skin on top of it customized for small netbook screens. If you install the Netbook Remix version and don't like it, there's a simple command that will disable the skin and take you to the vanilla interface. Vice-versa is also true - if you install the vanilla version and want to play with the netbook remix, just install the remix package(s) and off you go. I went the latter direction - I installed vanilla 9.04 (actually, 8.10, when the UNR wasn't quite as polished) and later installed the remix packages to test them out. I didn't much care for the skin, so I disabled them and I'm back to the vanilla interface.

When you install Remix, you can switch back to the normal UI using Desktop Switcher but be aware there's an annoying bug with Desktop Switcher which leaves you with a blank desktop.

Here's the fix:

if you know what your doing at all....standard is much more comfortable. If your new to linux by all means save yourself some trouble and go for the netbook remix.

But ya, if you've used gnome before, and know your way around a traditional linux desktop definitely stick with the standard edition. The remix is just hassle to me. But my neighbor who of course is an average non tech acquainted windows user likes the netbook remix better.

I tried both and ended up going with the standard 9.04 install. On another 9.04 note...any of you who have installed it on your 10v....did you have a problem with the volume being really low? I checked the master volume and it was all the way up...that is what kept me from keeping 9.04 on it...

I went for the standard 9.04 vanilla and it works almost flawlessly and seems to be much faster on suspend / wake and re-connecting to the wireless network.

HOWEVER my main problem is with the trackpad: using two fingers simultaneously (as in drag and drop) was absolutely fine on the stock Dell 8.04 setup, but now I've installed 9.04 it's more or less impossible! There don't seem to be any clear pointers on the forums - does anyone have an answer to this?

I've also noticed that the volume has dropped; I'm not sure why this is, it doesn't bother me a great deal but it's an interesting side-effect.
