Question 10v - Can it be forced to boot from SD card? - 07-20-2009, 11:58 PM

I've a brand new Mini 10v... Running Ubuntu 8.04 at the moment. Boots fine from the 16 GB SSHD, via F12 can boot from a USB flash drive -- works great. BUT, I'd like to be able to boot from a SD or SDHC card... I do NOT see an option via F12. Is it possible to make it work?

elsewhere posted is news that the a03 bios upgrade permits that. i upgraded but have struggled to get it to boot from sd. i was trying to clone my internal hdd to the sd card, both as backup, and also to enable other os experimenting on the main drive. since i think i buggered up the cloning, i can't say it is the boot process.

maybe search the forums for a03 bios?

I have A05 bios, and no, there is no option to boot from the SD slot.

But I successfully used SD cards to boot using a Sandisk MicroMate SD USB adapter (came packed with some SD cards bought some time ago).

So now I have several 8GB, 4GB, 2GB SD cards with various filesystems and boot options. I used one 8GB SD-HC (class 4) card to install Mac OS X.

This lets me have 2 cards mounted, one in the Mini's slot the other in the adapter. Great for copying across 2 cards and hd. Found that getting an 8GB SDHC card was cheaper than an 8GB USB stick, and much more convenient.

I think I have the A03 BIOS, and it does boot from the BIOS. Just choose the USB boot option, and it will boot.

Since it's so cool to have your system specs in your signature here...

I know this is an old post, but I thought others might find this useful. I have a 10v with A06 bios and you can boot from the SDHC slot. Apparently, the SDHC slot is connected to the USB bus. I've successfully booted Ubuntu from both and SD and SDHC card. It is notable that in the boot menu, sometimes you have to select "USB Storage" and sometimes you have to select "Removable Devices" to boot off the SDHC slot.

I've actually been running an Ubuntu Remix system off of a class 10 SDHC card for the past few days. It really works quite well and I would suggest it as a solution for anyone who doesn't want to give up hard drive space, or didn't properly partition their hard drive for dual booting at the initial OS install.

Interesting. I downgraded from A06 to A05 in my 10v back when the conventional wisdom was that an OS X install went better that way. Maybe I'll look into doing an A06 upgrade (but now with an OS X 10v).

It is cool that SDHC cards work in the 10v. Now if it just had a CF slot for my EOS 7D :-)

Thanks for posting your experience and updating this older thread!

i'm also running the same combo for same reason. if you decide to do that, please advise how it turned out. i'm not super interested in booting winbloze, but might be up for keeping it on an sd card, bein's it came with the box.
