Heres my two cents on installing the audio drivers. So, if you've installed any audio kext(s) before like the VoodooHDA, you'll have to remove it first. You should be able to find those kext(s) under: \System\Library\Extensions

Things to Download:
- Kext Helper b7
- Vanilla AppleHDA (This is the stock leopard kext file)
- LegacyAppleHDA
- HDAEnabler
- VerbHelper

Steps:
1) Remove any installed audio kext(s) from previous installation(s)
2) Restart to make sure no audio devices are detected anymore (check if there are entries in the input and output tab from system preferences > sound)
3) Open up Kext Helper b7
4) Drag and Drop all the .kext files (AppleHDA, LegacyAppleHDA, HDAEnabler, VerbHelper) into the Kext Helper b7
5) Enter your admin password in the textbox and click "Easy Install"
6) Restart your mini

This was what I did and it works on mine. I've attached a zip file with all the files you need as mentioned above. Hope it works on your dell mini!

Just for reference (if it matters at all), I installed OSX using dellEFI 125a.

Thanks to lnxneo and anguish for all the help!
Forgive me for asking this, but how does this solution actually work? Are the kext files modified to include the specific definitions outlined in the 'vanilla' post elsewhere in this forum? I'm going to give this a try this evening; I'm just curious to know how this solution can work with just copying over a few kexts via KextHelper, whereas others appear to require knowledge of how to decompile and recompile files...

just dumping the kext files into the installer doesn't work for me (unless the key is dumping them all at once which is something i haven't tried), so i can't tell you how it's supposed to work....but i used dellefi1.1 which i've heard others have used....i don't think anyone has completely explained step for step how they got their sound to work, a step must be left out somewhere otherwise everyone would have sound. i'm assuming you don't have to 'edit' anything and that the dsdt that 1.1 makes can be used without any recompiling. Also they mention reinstalling the vanilla applehda...i would assume you would only install it if you've messed with the stock one apple installed (wrong assumption)..otherwise skip that step, unless it has been modified in some way that i'm not aware of.

Here's what my audio (built in) now shows

Device ID: 0x102802F4
Audio ID: 272
Available Devices:
Internal Mic
Connection: Internal
Line In:
Connection: 1/8 inch jack
Speaker:
Connection: internal
Headphone:
Connection: 1/8 inch jack

shouldn't there be some type of line out in there somewhere....multiple reinstalls and reloads of kext files and that's as far as i can get.

Also all my output volumes have a greyed out check beside mute (im guessing because it's not seeing the line out.

i'm using the stock applehda and ioaudio that came with the 10.5.8 patch (had this same problem with 10.5.7 so didn't replace them).

SOUND WORKS..YAY FOR ME

started using dellefi12a5, still didn't work, reloaded kext files (all but applehda since i had the new one from 10.5.7 or 8 and hadn't changed them at all). Finally figured i may as well replace the applehda file since i'd tried every other possible combination under the sun, rebooted and SOUND. I had assumed when it was listed as Vanilla applehda it meant stock, as in what apple sent during an update (it may still mean that). For whatever reason replacing my vanilla with the vanilla on the website did the trick. Though i never did replace my vanilla ioaudio kext with the one listed in the thread.

(backs away slowly and looks for a hard drive to make a backup of this monster).

When you say working, do you mean the whole shooting match (mute, headphone and internal speaker, and wake up from sleep)? I was only able to get internal speaker and that would go away after waking up from sleep.

well, actually hearing sound shocked me so much i didn't test the rest..wouldn't be surprised if i have similar issues like everyone else, using 10.5.8...though i'll test and let you know. also i disabled sleep, don't use that at all so not sure what it would do. Baby steps, i'll just wallow in my sound goodness.

I want to add my voice to The Chorus of the Mute.

My sound worked after the initial OS X install with the VooDoo update and then died (predictably) after Mini took its first nap. I've tried following the cut & paste method with Kext Helper B7 half a dozen times with no success.

I concur that while some methods evidently work for some users, the definitive fix has yet to be found and shared in the form of a simple "cookbook" like Meklort's that got the majority of us this far--preferably without any compiling or decompiling.

Judging by the tremendous energy of this community I am confident that such a fix is inevitable and equally confident the arrival of 10.5.8 or 10.6 will screw something else up. In which case I look forward to seeing the increasingly familiar list of names here again.

i think the initial problem with a cookbook is that you end up trying so many different, undocumented, things to get the stupid sound to work, you end up not remembering exactly what did it....in my case it was the applehda file (though i had tried that when i was running 10.5.7 and it didn't work). I also started using DellEfi12a5 instead of 1.1....so probably a combination of factors.

Here's something to try if you have audio but lose it after sleep like I did. I'm not 100% on the steps I took because I upgraded to 10.5.8 at the same time but I think the key to my finally fixing it after dropping those same 4 kexts 20 different times was to run dellefi 1.2a5 and select only the option to uninstall the dsdt.aml (this assumes that at some point you put in a custom dsdt.aml). Once you do that reboot, at which point I lost my wifi so I ran dellefi again and reinstalled the dell mini 9 extensions. Rebooted again and installed the 4 kexts. One last reboot and finally sound works even after sleep.

If this works for other people I wonder if the difference between those whose sound works after sleep and those who don't is that those who don't work accidentally checked the generate custom dsdt.aml at one point. Removing that and redoing the 4 kexts fixed my problem.

Okay, this may sound like a noobie question, but I have tried this so many times and I cannot get it to work...

I've reinstalled OS X and updated to 10.5.7 (I used the NetBook Installer 0.8.1) (for the 5th time) so no I have a brand new, fresh install.

I've tried to remove the AppleHDA kext but I still get stuff listed under the Input/Output areas of the sound preference.

I tried removing AppleHDA, Virtual Audio Driver and any other kext that has the word Audio on its name, but nothing!!! Every time I restart, there is still audio and stuff listed under input and output on the sound system preference.

Obviously, if I put the Mini 10v to sleep, I lose the sound.

I know that the 4 kext method requires that no audio devices are being recognized before installing the 4 kext, but I cannot for the life of me figure out which kext I have to remove to get the 10v to stop recognizing the audio.

Please note that nothing else is installed other than the kext installed by the fresh install, as well as anything that the NetBook Installer 0.8.1 installs when you click on install mini 10v extensions.

Any help???

Thanks.

bah. i cant get sound to work right...

I tried modifying the dsdt method and no available devices showed up:
Device ID: 0x102802F4
Audio ID: 272
Available Devices:

I tried using the kexthelper method with those 4 kexts and got sound. But, after I put my 10v to sleep and woke it back up sound no longer worked. Tried a few reboots and still the sound failed. I did notice that my audio id differed when using this methos:

Device ID: 0x102802F4
Audio ID: 12

Anyone have this same problem or a solution?

Hey vapormike - or anyone......... I had the standard old install, nothing fancy from a previous installation or other attempted fixes. I did get rid of KEXTs related to audio that I knew about...... but after rebooting ALL of my same audio devices were listed as before.

I tried the Kext Helper b7 method anyway, but I still have no audio from my Mini 10v. I'm not sure how to get audio devices from being detected, could anyone please lend a hand?
