Default Chameleon triple boot help - 11-09-2011, 05:36 PM

Hello, everyone. First off, let me say that in no way am I a noob. I have used the search function successfully to the point that I have a successful triple boot with fully updated Win7, Fully updated UB 11.04, but only 10.6 OSX on my 10v. However, if I update to 10.6.7 I lose triple boot, but it will "quadruple" boot if I use my usb stick with the OSX install on it. So, my question is, HOW DO I UPDATE MY 10.6 TO 10.6.7 AND KEEP MY TRIPLE BOOT, DO I HAVE TO START FROM SCRATCH, OR IS THIS POSSIBLE with just update?

If you are arrogant and think i am stupid because this is my first post, then just don't reply.

If you have the answer and a couple of minutes of precious time, could you please assist me, I HAVE SEARCHED AND SEARCHED AND SEARCHED HERE, AND AT TONYMAC, AND OSX86 AND I cannot figure this out. I used 8.4 RC1 to begin with, but have tried with 8.3, 8.5, and 8.5 pre, and i have successfully setup a triple boot with all four of these NBIs, but I cannot get updated to 10.6.7 without losing my triple boot. My OSes are on different partitions, with appropriate filesystems, so GRUB is not an option as it wont boot OSX even though it shows up. PLEASE someone who is not a jerk help me!!

I have had similar experience with this and the OSX install completely beyond recovery. I found that after a re-intallation on a drive with working Win 7 and Linux Mint that the Win 7 partition was not affected but somehow I lost GRUB on Linux. I tried every repair I could find to fix GRUB but ultimately I had to re-install mint.

As a sugestion, though I have not tried it, you may be able to clone the OSX partition to a USB partition and make it bootable, do the update and clone it back. That would not affect the hybrid partiton tables.

You haven't explained what 'losing your triple boot' means. Do you mean that the multi boot menu doesn't show, or that Chameleon fails to detect your partitions, or something else?

If you hold SHIFT while booting, do you get to the expected multi boot Chameleon menu?

If so, you maybe just need to add Instant Menu = yes to your com.apple.Boot.plist

Here is a link to how I set up my triple boot on my 10v, but I will add that when I tried the same thing with Lion on my PC I had to install the latest Chimera bootloader.
I have since updated it to 10.6.7 with no problems.
Working tripple boot (10.6.5 Win7 Ubuntu 10.10)

Ok, some more info, maybe to get some more ideas. If I change my Win7 partition to active, then boot into OSX(from chameleon on usb stick), it recognizes the change. if I change my OSX partition to active then boot into Win 7(from chameleon on usb stick), it notes the change. Regardless of whether the OSX or WIN 7 is "ACTIVE" on boot i get "boot0:error." If I boot from osx installer usb stick, i get four options, the install dvd, mac osx, win 7, and ubuntu 11.04, and they all boot up properly and work how they should. If i change my partition1 to active, which is the EFI partition, i get "boot0:error." Making my ubuntu active i think would cause grub to load as it does when i choose ubuntu from usb stick, but I am pretty sure it is not the partition that is supposed to be active for me to boot with chameleon, but without having to use the usb stick.

Basically I cannot seem to get into any OS without the usb osx install stick doing it with chameleon.

I have a GUID partition table. Part 1, is 200mb EFI, Part 2 is HFS+ with OSX, Part 3 is WIN 7 NTFS, Part 4 is SWAP, Part 5 is EXT4 with ubuntu 11.04. All main "primary."

Any ideas, or can anyone show me a guide to install a bootloader onto the EFI partition or maybe carve out some space from the swap area for a bootloader, any suggestions would be useful, I am willing to try anything.

gptsync did nothing.

Are you using this version of nbi?

Make sure the osx partition is active then boot into osx from your usb stick and install it.
Try that and then post back.

still getting "boot 0:error" after installing suggested NBI "chameleon only" to "osx" partition. Windows still boots, linux no longer does, osx still boots with usb stick, but getting "boot 0:error" when efi partition is active, getting "boot 0:error" when osx partition active, windows boots when windows partition is set active.

How did you partition your drive? if you used Disk utility from osx setup it will never work.
You have to do it from diskpart from the windows setup and create a hybid partition table.
The instructions are in the link I posted.

I have a triple boot desktop rig, Snow, Lion and WIin7. I never used diskpart for that, just Disk Utility in Mac OS.

Is Ubuntu the limiting factor here?

Yes, you can put any amount of mac/win on a single drive but Linux screws it up. You have to have a hybrid partition table.
