I recommend you give Gimp for Mac a try. I use the Linux version of it all the time and it's a nice alternative.
If you want to keep doing things the Photoshop way, then you might want to check out Gimpshop for Mac. It's a version of Gimp hacked to use Photoshop commands and setup. I've never used it myself so can't give you a personal recommendation, but it may be exactly what you're looking for.
