Default Help! 10v 10.5.6 install fails to boot from installer at 'galaxy' background - 09-22-2011, 07:07 PM

Hi all, new member, needing help, I am completely failing to get anywhere with my 10v

Can't get it to boot from the install disk image!

I have tried mechdrews instructions NB1 (Leopard)

with no success at all.

I do understand what is supposed to be going on, but what happens every time is that when I try to boot from the modified install disk, then it freezes at the spinning grey apple logo screen.

- x or -f gets me to almost completely booted with the 'galaxy background' or whatever its proper name is, and a cursor that immediately turns to SBBOD. No repsonse what ever you do at that point.

Here's what I have done:

Retail 10.5.2 -> external USB HDD, (or brand-new Sandisk USB stick makes no difference)
as per mechdrews instructions using Disk Utility Restore
run netbookbootmaker on it 0.8.3 final from mechdrews link
set bios settings on 10v correctly
boot from usb - sticks forever with grey spinner

can try -s and it crashes , no keyboard input possible. The last lines read:

--start quote---
If you wish to boot the system:
exit

-sh-3.2#
---end quote---

- with no flashing cursor just a solid block, and no repsonse to keyboard at all. (I was hoping to have some input at this point)

downgrading to a05 firmware makes no difference at all.

(10v runs windows xp perfectly and all seems to work!)

Am I missing something obvious??? I am normally pretty good at this sort of thing but this seems to simply not work at all, straight out of the box ...

Ben

I think you have to use the Retail 10.5.6 disk to use NBI/NBM. I don't remember a 10.5.2 Retail disk and I am almost certain that 10.5.6 was specified when NBI/NMB was developed.

So are you saying that you never even made it into the installation screen to install Leopard?

If so, it sounds like the installation media isn't working properly.

Yes that's exactly correct, it almost completely boots from the modified installer DVD but gets spinning beachball of death before starting the installer. Note this is ONLY if I force it to boot -x; normal boot hangs.

I too think the installation media isn't working properly!! ;-)

Only thing is, the original is a OSX dvd I use regularly. I have made the 10v-installation image freshly 4 times now; using 2 different usb HDD enclosures and one brand-new (bought for this purpose) sandisk USB stick.

All behave exactly the same.

But I can boot/install my Macbook Pro OR Powerbook G4 from the original install dvd no problems. So the DVD is ok....

I am guessing that this normally works OK? Or do only x% of 10v owners get it to work and the others just give up?

It usually works with Snow Leopard. Most people quit installing Leopard because the SL disc was only $29 versus Leo being $129 originally and then going up when it wasn't available at a retail location anymore.

I did a Leo install on my mini 9 using a boot disc and an external X-BOX 360 add on USB HDDVD drive back in the day, but once the NBM/NBI came along, it was much simpler.

I have done the SL install numerous times on mini 9's and 10v's without incident, but my initial Leo install took a few tries and even once it finished installing it reported an error, but was fully functional.

If your USB installation drive is formatted and the image is restored to it correctly and NBM run against the drive, it should boot into the installer.

What partition and format scheme did you use when making your USB stick?

I use Mac OS Extended Journaled and GUID on mine and have never had an issue.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance to you. Tons of people have Hackintoshed their mini 9's and 10v's, but with Lion out, there aren't as many people using this forum now.
