Default 10.6 to 10.6.7 - best practice? - 07-20-2011, 09:28 PM

I just bought another 10v (still under warranty, with 6 cell battery, a great find) to serve as a backup in case my first one goes belly-up. My mini has become essential to my traveling life - very portable and OSX (love Apple, hate Windows) and few worries if it should be stolen, since it was relatively inexpensive.

Now, I'm going to have to do another hack when mini#2 arrives.

Should I follow the same process I used before on my first hack?
I started with a 10.6 SL install disk (not a 10.6.3) and used NBI 8.4rc1 to get to 10.6.3 which mini #1 still is running. Using mechdrew's directions.

OR can I skip NBI 8.4rc1 and go directly to the NBI zip file that ends in ...351 to go from 10.6 to 10.6.7 in one fell swoop?

Some dropbox links for the ...351 zip file don't work. Can what's in a dropbox zip file contain malware or something worse - how to know which zip to use?

If there is space on my flash drive, is there any reason I can't have both the original NBI I used and the ...351 on the same drive? Or is 8.4... irrelevant once I go to the newer one?

Thanks,
J

good question. I did the install with 0.8.3 and 10.6.0 on USB and can not seem to get past 10.6.2 despite which MBI I have tried them all and right now I'm back to 10.6.2. I have been installing the latest MBI including the modifed 351 and running it before I attempt the combo updates yet no joy?

Yes, you can skip 0.8.4 rc1 and go directly to the NBI 351, and with that NBI you can also update directly from 10.6.0 to 10.6.7, it saves a lot of time.
that's what I did.

Don't be paranoid man...

If there is enough space on your flash drive, there is no reason you can't have both on it, but after the OS X installation complete, you need to copy nbi 351 manually from your flash drive to your HDD and then run it.

Right I'm a bit of a newbie at this, but I got my 10v yesterday and managed to get 10.6.0 working on it no problem. However, when I tried installing 10.4 combo, and then later 10.7 combo, both installs failed and i had to totally start again as it would just boot into the home screen after the apple sign and do nothing. I am using NBI special am I doing anything wrong?

Do you mean that the updates you installed are 10.6.4 and 10.6.7 instead of 10.4 and 10.7?

can you write here all the steps you did?
What modifications on OS X you did?
What additional kexts you installed?
How about the BIOS settings?
Are you sure that you use retail OSX 10.6.0?
hackintosh distro may cause problems on updating and it's illegal.

Yeah, sorry I thought I had written that but obviously not. Well I tried anyway but both of them failed right at the end.

To get to 10.6.0 I used this guide and it worked fine. -

1. Before we start installing we should set up the BIOS for the Dell Mini 10v: turn on the Dell Mini 10v and at the point where the Dell logo appears, press ‘F2′ for setup.
2. You are now in the Dell Mini 10v’s BIOS. Press the right arrow key once to move to the ‘Advanced’ tab.
3. Ensure that the options ‘USB BIOS Legacy Support’ and ‘Bluetooth’ are set to ‘Enabled’ – if not, select it using the arrow keys, hit ‘enter’, select ‘Enabled’ and hit ‘enter’ again.
4. Ensure that the option ‘USB Wake Support’ is set to ‘Disabled’ – if not, select it using the arrow keys, hit ‘enter’, select ‘Disabled’ and hit ‘enter’ again.
5. At this point, connect the USB drive to the Dell Mini 10v and power on the USB drive.
6. Press the right arrow key twice to move to the ‘Boot’ tab.
7. Press the down arrow key to select ‘USB Storage’. Then press ‘F6′ to move it above ‘Hard Drive’ so that the Dell Mini 10v will boot from the USB drive.
8. Press ‘F10′ and then select ‘Yes’ and hit ‘enter’ to save & confirm these changes to the BIOS: the Dell Mini 10v will now boot into Snow Leopard from the USB drive!
9. Once you’ve selected your language, click on the ‘Utilities’ menu and select ‘Disk Utility…’.
10. Select the Dell Mini 10v’s internal drive in the left-hand column, ensure that you click on the parent icon which states the drive capacity, e.g. “64.11 GB”.
11. Select the ‘Partition’ tab and then under “Volume Scheme:” click on ‘Current’ and change it to ‘1 Partition’.
12. Ensure that ‘Format:’ is set to “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”.
13. Click ‘Options…’, select “GUID Partition Table” and then click ‘OK’.
14. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Partition’ and give the Dell Mini 10v a moment to format your hard disk and create the new partition.
15. Once complete, quit ‘Disk Utility’.
16. Configure your installation as you would on your normal Mac and let the installation run, and then that’s it!

As far as I know I didnt do any mods except installed firefox, and have no idea about kexts sorry.

The only things I changed in the bios was changing it so that it boots from usb first.

And yeah definitely used a retail 10.6, bought it last week.

Thanks.

Why didn't you run NBI special (NBI...351) after the OS X installation finished?

Why didn't you change back the bios settings to boot from HDD as the first boot device?
And to get sleep works, you need to disable USB legacy and USB wake on BIOS.

On your previous post you wrote that you were using the special NBI, did you also run it or just copied it to your HDD?

I will switch the bios settings around now. At the moment the NBI is just on my boot usb, does it make a difference if it is on the hdd?

Yes it does make a difference.
You need the special NBI on your hard drive.
place it on applications folder to have easy access.
run the special NBI;
select your hard drive name on the target;
check install chameleon 2;
check install mini 10v extensions;
check generate (or regenerate) system specific dsdt.aml;
click install button.
After it's done, close it, reboot your mini.
set the first boot device to your HDD, remove the USB stick attached, let it boots.
run combo update 10.6.7.
when update installation finishes, don't click restart when it prompts, run again the special NBI with the same settings as before.
after it's done, close NBI, and click restart button on the update installation window.

This worked perfectly Thanks a lot mate.
