Default Unstable sound - 05-10-2011, 06:41 AM

Hello:

I have 10.6.7 running on my 1011 perfectly, except for one annoying detail: the sound system is very unstable.

Every now and then, the sound system does not register with the OS.
No sound, the speaker icon in the menu is greyed out, and System Profiler says that sound is not installed.

Essentially, when the machine boots, sometimes the sound will work A-OK, sometimes it won't, I haven't found a pattern; it's totally random.

Running UpdateExtra or NBI doesn't help either, as after rebooting after doing either, it may or may not work. Here again, totally random.

I was wondering whether anyone out there had the same issue and knew how to make the sound hardware detection more reliable.

Thank you for the help

I've had this problem since I installed OS X over a year ago, with 10.6.2 (I think).

I upgraded to 10.6.7 a few weeks ago using the version of NBI that everyone recommends for that (the one ending in 531 or something like that). I haven't seen it happen since then BUT I've only had three or four reboots, so I might just be lucky.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

Yes, same experience here. I installed with 10.6.3 and ran for a few months. Then, fed up with the instability, I upgraded to 10.6.7, using NBI20100616212351. Unfortunately, that didn't fix it.

Tonight, sound is back up and running.
System Profiler's output is as follows:
___
Intel High Definition Audio:
Audio ID: 272
Internal Microphone:
Connection: Internal
Speaker:
Connection: Internal
Line Input:
Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack
Headphone:
Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack

Hi,

I am noticing the same problem on a couple of Mini-10v that I have. 10.6.7 is great but sounds behaves exactly as Andromaque describes. It's all good when it works, but a high percentage of times (30-40%) when you boot up the sound is not present (speaker icon grey'd out).

I wonder if the fix that is out there for the Mini 9 (Akki's sound fix) would work on the 10v as well and fix this issue once and for all.
Here is the link to the fix I am referring to:
Bundle for fixing Mini 9 Sound & Mic

Has anyone tried?

Thanks,

Simax.

I haven't tried that. However, on my 10v this issue sometimes happens (been happening since before 10.6.7 I think) and it seems to be cured by rebooting and going into the BIOS setup. Not necessarily changing anything, but just going in and then exiting.

Same problem here, since maybe even before Snow Leopard. Haven't found a real fix, but a reboot or two always seems to restore sound and so for me it's pretty much just an annoyance.

Default "No output devices found" - 07-03-2011, 02:25 PM

Just installed OS 10.6.3 along with Netbookinstaller 0.8.4RCI.app.zip. Most things are working well except that I have no audio. I went to system preferences to the speakers and it does not find an output device. Should I run netbookinstaller 20100616212351? I started to run it but then chickened out. . ..Thanks!

You need to run either NBI special or 0.8.4 again after you finish your install in order to install the sound, video and wireless kexts as well as having your track pad work.

Look at your Finder bar at the top of your screen, if it isn't translucent Quartz Extreme isn't working.

I'm having the same problem too, unfortunately, and it seems really inconsistent. Sometimes it'll be fine for a few days and sometimes it'll take a few reboots to come back. Not sure why but I guess I'll live with it in lieu of shelling out for a 'real' mac :P.

Lost audio when upgraded 6.7.
I've rebooted a dozen times but no luck so far.
Do we expect a USB headset to still work?
