Is your intermittent sound due to no sound after sleep. I had this problem, solved it up upgrading to Netbookinstaller 20100616212351.app NetbookInstaller + 10.6.4 « Meklort's Blog.
I also repaired permissions using oynx.
Since them sound has been rock solid . I have updated 10.6.5 no problems

Audio is either available or totally not present after booting into OS X.
Need to Restart (sometimes twice or more) for it to become available.
Again, all this is intermittent.

I also had problems with the audio intermittently not working after updating to 10.6.4 (from 10.6.2).
However, I managed to fix it a few weeks back. I've even updated to 10.6.5 since then with no problems.
The netbook has been used about a dozen times since then, as a media playback device. The sound is used every time it is switched on. I would have been told in no uncertain terms if there was an issue.
Furthermore, I think I know what was going wrong and why my method fixes it.
Here's how I got it working:
1) Find "HDAEnabler.kext" in /Extra/Mini10vExt (make /Extra visible if it is not already, by running NBInstaller and ticking the "Show Files" option)
2) Install "HDAEnabler.kext" to /System/Library/Extensions (/S/L/E) using "kexthelper b7" (from http://cheetha.net/)
... and that's it!
I believe that the reason the sound breaks intermittently is that if HDAEnabler.kext is in /Extra.Extensions.mkext, it gets loaded too soon. This can cause it to fail, depending on the exact order that kexts are loaded. If AppleHDA.kext is not loaded, then you get no sound.
This can be seen in the log files. When the sound works, HDAEnabler is loaded successfully. When the sound breaks, HDAEnabler is NOT loaded and complains about there being no AppleHDA to load.
If HDAEnabler is in /S/L/E, it gets loaded much later: it certainly seems to be loaded after the AppleHDA kext, and therefore this always works.
If it is present in both places, then there is a race to see which one gets loaded first. Whichever one is loaded, the second copy is ignored. There seem to be no negative side-effects.
Of course, if Merklot sees fit to change the version of HDAEnabler.kext or decides to use another method of loading the audio, then this will break: so Caveat Hackor!
In fact, before you update NBI again it might be a good idea to delete the kext from /S/L/E and just-to-be-safe use Onyx to rebuild the kernel and boot extensions...
