I would use it on the iMac first, then after you can run NetBookInstaller against the drive to use with your mini.

Question: did you follow the directions on making the bootable usb disk from McDrew? Also did you use your Mac book Pro to make your disk? I'm a newbie at osx but if it is an intel based system it should work. I used an older mac mini system to make my bootable disk, and followed the directions. Things went smoothly. I would try starting over and see what yields.
