Jillmcd, don't throw it out just yet, I have bios a06 10v, recently used sl 10.6 and followed directions you mention, only I used a new SanDiscCruzer. I would start from ground zero and follow directions from this site. It worked for me just fine. Try a new retail copy of SL and a new usb. The steps do matter. Not sure why no one else has offered advice but don't give up

Erase the flash drive again with MBR partition.You could write zeros to it for good measure, but that may be unnecessary.
Make a disk image of the Installer DVD first, highlight the Install DVD in the sidebar of Disk Utility, go to the New menu and choose New Image from Mac OS X Install DVD, with options DVD/CD Master and no encryption and save it to disk. If that is successful, you probably don't need to buy another copy of the SL installer. Then restore that image onto the USB flash drive and take it from there.
