I've been puzzled about the running of NBI. After I did my initial install using mechdrew's guide before he added the 10.6.4 update info, I was sure I hadn't run NBI as part of the install, just netbootmaker: Dell Mini 10v Installation via USB and Mac | Guides | OS X | mechdrew
But NBI was in my app folder and when I asked - meklort, I believe, said if it was there, then I had run it.

In any case, I ran it again to resolve the sound issue - it didn't, just rebooting manymany times fixed it sort of, but sometimes it still doesn't work...

Thanks for saying above what you did; I think it clarifies things for me. Getting ready to go to 10.6.4

Related question: I don't always do all the updates suggested by Software Updater. I always check first on the Apple forums; I download and install manually those I plan to install.
You do them all you say? With no issues?

underwhelmed - Could you take a look at what I asked here please, though I suspect once I do the combo update to 10.6.4 these may no longer be an issue. Any thoughts?: Software Updates after combo update?
Hmm, my understanding of the install process, and granted I was already using my Hackintoshed mini 9 to prep the USB, was to run NBI from the Utility Menu after SL was finished installing, and before it rebooted. That's probably from an older set of instructions posted here at some point, but that's what I always do when I do a mini install.

When SL first came out there were many people who had to re run NBI multiple times to get the video kexts to load properly. The minis would boot into SL, but they had no screen savers, had strange artifacts on certain menus, etc.

Be sure you get the newest NBI from the official update thread and run it before you update to 10.6.4. After you complete the Update and your mini re-boots, NBI will run again, automatically. After the Apple logo, you will see the NBI logo. Do not interrupt this process, do not power cycle your mini if it seems to be taking too long. If you do, you will have to recover your install. It might take as long as 15-20 minutes for NBI to complete after updating to 10.6.4.

As to the Software Updates, if they aren't an OS Update, I go ahead and install them. I may not need them now, but I might down the road. I haven't had any issues so far, but as you pointed out, they may not actually do anything for our mini's other than increase our OS size on the hard drive. Let your conscience and your experience be your guide on this.

Thanks for the reply here, underwhelmed.

I am always leery about just jumping on the SU suggestions for updates. I perhaps err on the side of caution, and reading the Apple forum may be a mistake since it seems only the people who run into trouble write there.

iLife 09 update which was not available as a download, only via software updater made folks at Apple skeptical about its workability. I have iLife 09 on our MBP but not yet on the mini.

The updates for things I don't have - part of me says why bother? it may screw things up - while part of me says, why not?...

Do you use the SU automatically, or do manual installs as I do?

As always, it's good to read your replies,
J

JnC,

I usually just run Software Update manually and make sure what's available.

So far I haven't had any performance issues, but that could always change I suppose.

Part of me thinks Apple might be getting a bit too much like Microsoft with some of these updates. The other part tells the first part to shut up and enjoy not having to run a firewall and an anti virus.

Default WebCam not working on a Mini-10v (10.6.4) - 09-03-2010, 03:51 PM

I have "Hackintoshed" several Mini-10v's, but this latest one has me perplexed. I followed all of the usual steps, as outlined so well in these Forums (thanks again to all those who've done so much to make this process a breeze, including Meklort, MechDrew, and many others). I even installed the 10.6.4 Update and subsequent installation of the NBI "patches". The Mini boots perfectly, and everything works EXCEPT THE BUILT-IN WEBCAM! When I open any Apps that use it (PhotoBooth, iChat, Skype), it says "There is no connected camera". I'm assuming there's a missing Kext that's responsible for this error. Any advice on what the Kext is that is used to enable the Mini-10v's built-in WebCam, and how to install it? Thanks!
