Hi I'm new here! After much reading, I am about to take the hackintosh plunge!
I just bought a Mini 10v off of Dell's outlet site. Should arrive in about a week. I intend to install OS X and use this as a portable device for importing and cataloguing my photos while I am on vacation, in preparation for processing when I get back home.
I want to upgrade both the RAM and the hard drive. I've learnt from experience that OS X can be finicky with RAM, so I want to make sure I install something that's going to give me the least amount of problems. For example, should I only order something off of Crucials's web site that is stated to be compatible with the Mini 10v (using their compatibility tool)? Will I be fine if I buy a discount brand somewhere else? I can stomach the $50 cost for a 2GB stick that Crucial wants to charge me, as opposed to $30 for something else -- the promise of fewer problems is worth $20 to me.
Same goes for the hard drive -- will I have an issue upgrading to a 500 GB drive? I'm thinking a Seagate or one of the new WD Scorpio drives -- love how quiet they are.
I intend to do both of these upgrades prior to installing OS X. Are there any gotchas that I should be aware of? (other than what's already outlined in the installation guides -- which are fantastic I might add!)
Thanks for all your help!
