Default Webcam on the Hackintosh - 07-31-2010, 04:44 PM

Hey all, I have a Mini10v that I installed SL on about a week ago. Everything is working great considering the usual problems I have seen listed here (audio, sleep, etc) but I am unable to get iMovie or iPhoto to recognize the 1.3MP webcam.

Is there a fix for this?

Am I missing something obvious?

Or do I need to buy an aftermarket one and use it? I am adventurous and dont mind soldering things to usb ports or anything, so if i need to reroute/rewire cables, I am open to that solution. Thanks!

Don't know about the 10v - OS X had no trouble recognizing the 1.3 webcam in my 9.

Webcam works just fine on mine in iChat. Have not tried iMovie or iPhoto as I don't have the iLife suite.

Did you try PhotoBooth? Or looking in System Profiler under USB?

Sometimes the 10v starts up and the webcam isn't recognized. A reboot usually fixes.

tohvanah-

It is listed on the system profiler under USB (didnt think to look there). The main reason I am thinking I would use it though is for iMovie, and not for photos. Is this simply a still camera or does it take video? Is anyone else able to use it with iMovie?

I just thought to try Skype and it works with Skype. So it is a functioning webcam on my Hackintosh, I am just unable to get iMovie to recognize it. Anyone have any tips on making this work?

Photobooth works fine with mine. And it can record video. Perhaps that is a route to get into iMovie...

I'm not sure why iMovie wouldn't recognize it. I don't have iMovie installed currently to test...

It's happened to me twice now, where the camera would just not work out of no where. I just kept reinstall NBI till it worked. I don't know if thats the fix, or if it just comes back eventually, but the longest i went was about 3 days without the webcam. Altho I didn't need to use it much, so i don't know how it really effects you.

What version of iMovie are you using? I think only iMovie 6 HD can use the built-in webcam.

Which leads me to this question: how can I install iMovie 6 HD on a 10v? When I try, it says I need iLife '08. But when I try installing iLife '08, it says my computer is not supported.

Can I install iMovie 6 HD on a Dell 10v?

Kenchen,

Good thoughts. I do have a retail disc of iLife 06, so I can give it a shot. You would install the program on your Mini the same way you did the OS. Use the disk utility on a Mac and 'restore' the installation disc to a USB drive. When you plug the USB into your Mini, it will look like the installation screen you see when you insert the disc into a DVD drive.

By way of update, both Skype and Quicktime recognize the onboard webcam, but iMovie 09 does not. As long as I have a means of inputing video, I am happy, so Quicktime is a good fix. Anyone who would prefer iMovie, you might also try Kenchen's solution (iMovie 06 was a thing of beauty anyway).

Sorry - wehich solution?
I instaslled iLife 08 and iMovie 06 on the 10v but when I try to launch iMovie I get a message that the screen resolution is too low (need at least 1024x720).
Any way around that?

I would like the 10v to record some video.
BTW - Photobooth and webcam works fine for me.
