Default Software Updates after combo update? - 06-17-2010, 09:15 PM

I easily and successfully installed the combo update to 10.6.3 on our new mini 10v. I'm waiting a bit to do 10.6.4
Thanks to all for your support on this.

I checked for available updates using software updater (I didn't download or install any, just copied the list)

I recognize some and will do them, but have questions about others.
Are these are OK? Necessary?

##iLife support v9.0.4?? I don't have any version of iLife installed on the mini. I read on the Apple forum that folks were and weren't getting this update notice regardless of whether they had iLife 09 and that it was not available as a download, only via software updater. Skip it?

##Airport Base Station 2010-001? I don't have an airport base station - when I scan using the airport utility it finds no device. Skip it?

##Remote Desktop Client 3.3.2?

##Java for OS X 10.6 update 2 - I assume this is a Yes.

Thanks,
J

4 above updates is safe to install. I have installed all these without any problems, no need to run NBI again. You can easily update to 10.6.4 : **OFFICIAL** Mac OS X 10.6.4 Update Thread

Thanks for your reply, pokenguyen.

Any thoughts on the 2 updates I left in my quote above?
I've used SoftwareUpdater to check for updates for years on our Macs - but why would it tell me to update something (iLife) I don't have?
I can understand the Airport thing since I do have the utility installed, but iLife??? Doesn't SU know what I don't have?

I also don't know if it is neccessary (seem it's not), but it's better to have all the updates installed.

I've found further information in case anyone else is reading this who hasn't yet done all these updates. After all the help I've received here, I'd like to try to give something back (in addition to donating, of course)

I poked around the Apple forum and learned a lot.

I was worried about the updates listed in SU specifically in relation to the working of SL on our mini which, obviously, I didn't find at the Apple forum.

Here's a brief summary of what I read about the updates -
iLife support 9.0.4 caused folks a lot of trouble whether they had iLife or not. Turned out not to be a much recommended update - though I know on Apple it's mostly the ones who have trouble that are writing (Since this update is not yet on the support download page though it came out six months ago, there was some discussion at MacRumor and Apple about why Apple hadn't pulled the update from SU).

Airport Base Station
update - not necessary to do if you don't have a base station

Remote Desktop Client
update - ditto

I've learned over the years with our 5 Macs that some updates are unnecessary and can even result in issues. It's not necessarily the case that every suggested update needs or has to be done.

A bit OT perhaps but I'm running 10.6.2 and NBI 0.8.3 and I haven't done any updates in quite some time. Is it OK to update via Apple's software update these days? I've been using my real mac for awhile as I replaced its broken screen but I'd like to get my mini 10V back up to spec...

OS updates are not ok to install automatically - read the stickies in the General section. If you want 10.6.4, run the updated NBI in post 67 of the 10.6.4 thread.
