I had a similar issue, try the guide here NetbookInstaller 2: USB Mac Installation via Any Operating System | Guides | OS X | mechdrew as well as the programs he recommends for burning images (InfraRecorder worked for me - using windows 7)
Following that, try booting with only 1 USB (the boot loader) and the try with both the USB's (as I tried this also and got different results)

If so there's your problem, you would be overwriting anything you had already put on the drive.

I'll just throw this out there...I was having the similar issue. I had WinXP on my Dell Mini 9, but finally got a OSX dvd (10.6). I had one failed installation - I only got as far as formatting the ssd drive when I had to restart...upon which, I repeatedly got the "can't find mach kernal message". I re-ripped the DVD image, re-imaged both USB drives multiple times, same result. Used gparted to delete the partition, and followed mechdrew's walkthrough, and voila, I now have a currently working hackintosh.
