Kernel panic on installation (10.5.1 retail disk) - 05-15-2010, 11:21 AM
Finally got my mini 10v, and I'm trying to install Leopard on it. I'm following this guide to the letter.
Problem is, somewhere in the middle of the process of installation, I just get a kernel panic (around "14 minutes left", if that matters). I tried the installation from the beginning several time, each time formatting the HDD. Now I can't even format it or partition it, I get a "Resource busy" message. I can format the partition though.
I've also tried to format my USB HDD (2.5'' 500 Gb USB-powered), including writing 0s all over it, and restoring from the disk image I made from my Install DVD. I'm confused, I can't find where the problem comes from, either by trying or by searching the net, so if you have any ideas.
Here are some infos that MAY be relevent (ask if anything is missing) :
-Mini 10v came with BIOS A06, I just bought it
-The desktop I use to prep the USB HDD is an iMac HDD running Leopard
-The install disk is a retail 10.5.1 DVD (could it be that it is too old of a version ? unfortunately I don't have any other and don't wish to buy another one)
I can't think of anything else, if you think of something please let me know.
Thanks for these tools and this community, and keep up the good work !
More info : in order to test my install disk I installed a copy of OS X on another external drive of mine to see if it would fail, and it did install OK. It is a regular install, not prepared for hackintosh. I successfully booted from this disk on my iMac.
Update : tried to use this other external drive as another installation disk, didn't work better. As for the internal mini HDD, I still can't format/partition it, and I've tried to do a "Repair Disk" but I get a message saying : "The disk "Mini" could not be unmounted" and that's it... This problem was (temporarily) solved by erasing it and naming it something else (in this case I named it "test"). I've started another installation in these conditions, will tell you the result as soon as it's done/crashed... [--> No surprise, it crashed ]

10.5.1 says supported but requires upgrade to 10.5.6
a) I know you've said both of these things, but just to double check... are you 100% certain you're using a RETAIL DVD and now a Mac restore disc that comes when you buy a new apple product?
b) are you using at least netbook bootmaker 0.8.3? (I know 0.8.4rc1 doesn't support Leopard, only Snow Leopard)
