Default Mechdrew USB OSX Installation via Macbook Air + Superdrive ... Possible? - 03-20-2010, 09:39 PM

[Note: I originally posted this in the Beginners section, which I later realized was probably the wrong section. I apologize. It would be great if a mod could delete that post.]

New to the forum. First, I appreciate all the info on here - very helpful! I have a Mini 10v on the way and am prepping my USB to install OS X (via Mechdrew's instructions).

Problem is the only Mac I have available is a Macbook Air and a Superdrive. Thus, I can't have the USB and the Superdrive hooked up at the same time (since there is only one USB slot - and can't hook up the Superdrive with a USB hub). Is there a way to copy the OSX DVD to the Mac so I then can then copy that over to the USB? I attempted to make an image of the install DVD using "Disk Utility" - which made a .dmg file. I tried to drag that over to the partitioned USB, and I got an error stating: "Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored."

Anyone ever done this? I tried to search the forums, but I was just finding people wanting to use their Hackintosh to run a Superdrive ... not use it to install OS X on the Mini. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

In DiskUtility, highlight the .dmg of the DVD image (on the left hand side), then select ScanImageforRestore in the Images menu at the top!

You had the right idea with the DMG. You just needed to mount it after you created it, then use the mounted volume as the source (not the DMG file) and your USB stick as the destination in the restore tab.

Thanks for the response. I went into Disk Utility, highlighted .dmg on left and went to Images > "Scan Image for Restore". After doing so, I got this error: "Unable to scan .dmg. Invalid argument."

Thanks for the response, as well. I doubled-clicked the .dmg on the desktop to "mount" it. It created a white icon that resembles a hard drive (thus - I believe - showing that it was mounted). When I go back into Disk Utility restore, it now shows up under the "Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg" as just "Mac OS X Install DVD" (without the .dmg) in the left pane. However, it does not allow me to drag the mounted (non-.dmg) version over to "Source". I also am unable to select it from the list when I click "Image..." next to "Source" - but I can still select the .dmg file - which does me no good.

Very confused. Any more help would be great! Trying to figure this one out.

Thanks in advance.

Now that you have it mounted, try scanning it again as above. I am not in OS X at the moment--and I can't recall the exact steps--but you have to select a certain Disk Utility menu item before OS X will allow you to restore from a mounted .dmg file. That is what you are looking for...

Have you tried right clicking on the mounted DMG and clicking "Set as Source"? If I recall correctly, I had some troubles trying to drag the mounted DMG to the source box.
