As a long-time mac user, will this give me the experience I'm used to with my macbook pro? I'm no techie so would appreciate any feedback before making a decision. Thanks.
My home machine is a MacBook. The Mini 9 does just fine and wins hands down on portability. Music, web, reading all good. It doesn't do particularly well for streaming video. Netflix online, youtube, etc. are choppy. Fine for watching video files copied locally.

I was investigating Silverlight for Netflix. It appears to need 1.8 GHz. Isn't the mini only 1.66?

How is anyone using it?

I have not tried, but given my experience with YouTube resolutions above 480, I'm skeptical that trying to watch video full screen at high resolution would work. I don't think it's a CPU or RAM issue, it's a graphics card issue. Netbooks are cheap because they're built from less expensive components. There are things that a $1,500 MacBook can do that a $300 netbook simply can't.

Would adding more ram help in this regard or is this a processor issue?

I am wanting to watch video as large on the monitor as will fit.
it's upgradeable to 2 gigs, but dell won't ship it with more than 1 gig. so you can get a 2 gig stick for around $30, but there's not an easy access panel on the bottom of the laptop, so you'll have to take the mini completely apart to upgrade it. which really isn't too hard it just seems intimidating.

I only implied it I guess, but used it and it was very choppy.

My son and I have both the same Mini 9.

He runs Snow Leopard with 16GB SDD and 2 GB RAM and I run a lite version of Win 7 with 8GB SDD and 1 GB RAM.

I must say (and he hesitantly admits) that my videos of any type including YouTube run smoother on my machine.

And I have started with ATARIs, Mac's and never touched Windows until now.

Hi all,
First post. Got my mini 10v running SL 10.6.2 on Friday, after some setbacks (partly my fault). Everything is running extremely well now and I'm very happy. Wi-fi, bluetooth, audio (I/O), sleep, all function perfectly. I'm a long time Mac user (since 1991, and our house is full of Macs), and this netbook seems to run as quickly as the last G4 Powerbooks, though I don't intend on doing processor-intensive stuff on it. It's made for travel so: music, movies, wireless broadband, browsing, email, dumping photos etc.

With that in mind, I ran some movies and television programs and playback was smooth with no glitches - a few compression artefacts but more than acceptable to me.

I'm also here because of disappointment at the iPad launch. I was really hoping for something more computer-like and less proprietary to replace my iPod Touch on long trips. I had never really considered the hackintosh path until that day. Glad I did. I'm still amazed at what I have for 350 Australian dollars.

Thumbs up Long-time Mac user here... - 03-23-2010, 07:02 PM

I've been a Mac user since high school back when the Apple II was released around 1985/86. I've had a lot of different Macs since then... SE30, Centris 650, Quadra, Power Mac G4, G5, etc.. My current Macs are my 8 core 2.8 Ghz Mac Pro with 4 TB RAID running dual 23" Apple Cinema Displays, and my new 13" MacBook Pro Unibody.

I have to say I'm more than impressed and very happy with my Dell 10v. I recently installed a dual boot of 10.6.2 Snow Leopard and Windows 7 Ultimate. But even before doing that, I tore it apart and added a 2GB stick of RAM, a 64 GB SSD, Bluetooth module, and upgraded the wireless card to the 1510 "N" card. I bought the 10v refurbished from an Ebay seller with a 6 cell battery for under $300. While I absolutely love my MacBook Pro... the Dell is that much smaller, lighter, and just easier to take around town. Not to mention the "cool" factor of how small it is and being able to run OSX and W7. Oh and being able to tether my iPhone to it makes the "cool" factor increase by 10 fold...!!!

A lot of my relatives and close friends are wanting one now that they've seen mine. I told them all to hurry up and get one before they're no longer available.

As seaflux mentioned about the iPad, I was also thinking about getting one but in my opinion, my 10v can do so much more for a lot less money. I still "may" get an iPad though. Just cause I'm such an Apple freak.

Dell Mini 10V • OS X 10.6.4 / Windows 7 Ultimate • 64 GB SSD • 2 GB RAM • Bluetooth • Wireless N 1510 • 6 Cell
2008 Mac Pro - 2.8 Ghz 8 Core • OS X 10.6.4 • Apple Raid Card / 4 TB RAID 5 • 16 GB RAM • Dual 23" Apple Cinema Displays
13" MacBook Pro Unibody • OS X 10.6.4 • 64 GB SSD / 500 GB HDD • 4 GB RAM
