The SL disc is not bootable by itself. You can bootstrap into it using either a flash drive with an NBI .img written to it or NetbookCD.

Could you please provide more details on creating the NBI .img on a USB drive? I've tried one method of that and it didnt recognize the external USB SL DVD. Perhaps your method might work.

Thanks a bunch!

Use the .img file linked in this guide and write it with dd or ImageWriter. It sounds like you did this and were able to boot NBI, but it just didn't show your external USB DVD drive with the SL DVD. If that is the case, then it isn't likely a problem with the way you created the NBI flash drive. Rather, it may be a problem with the DVD (are you using a retail SL upgrade DVD?). It could also be that your external drive just doesn't work with NBI Chameleon--not all do apparently. Since you do have an external DVD drive, you should also try using NetbookCD instead of NBI, if you haven't already.

Thanks for all of your help Minimalpc. Well, I managed to get Transmac to transfer the SL image to a USB drive. And I got NBI to boot it and run SL installer! My heart skipped a beat.

At the 99% of installation , I got a message "Install Failed". My heart sank... Nothing else to do but to restart. And NBI detect OS X on my hard drive! Booted up in OS X just fine. Audio doesnt work, but I was going to fix that later.

Until this morning, got a message from NBI "Mach Kernel missing" even before I select the OS X partition. And after selecting the OS X partition, I get the fatal error "Must hit power button...."

My thoughts are I'm missing some essential files created by NBI using a mac. Any ideas? Thanks.

As mentioned in the guides, it is not uncommon to get an error at the very end of the installation. This should not cause a problem and apparently did not if you were subsequently able to boot OS X.

Did you do anything that could have caused it to no longer boot (for example, update to 10.6.2)? According to the error, you are now somehow missing the OS X kernel file (mach_kernel). You can investigate the issue by booting the media you used to install then using Terminal from the Utilities menu. Once in Terminal, enter the following command:
ls -la /Volumes/InternalDrive/
(replace "InternalDrive" with the volume name of your Mac partition)

If you don't see a mach_kernel file listed, then you can copy it back over from the install media with
cp /mach_kernel /Volumes/InternalDrive/

Ok, I booted the mini and managed to force NB to run SL with the =Y command. Once I got in SL, I ran NetBoot Installer. And I made a fresh copy of SL DVD onto a USB with the Disk Utility. Thus, I now have a Mac made USB disk of SL.

After running NetBoot Installer, everything seems to run fine. To answer your earlier question, I did not update to 10.6.2 yet. Is it worth upgrading to it?

Thanks minimalpc!

I think it is, but you might as well wait for 10.6.3 at this point. It should be released in the near future. Just make sure you check here for instructions before upgrading. 10.6.3 will require updating to NBI 0.8.4.
