Default watching dvd from image? - 03-10-2010, 11:05 AM

hi!

i want to watch a dvd from an image. unfortunately os x tels me that there is no dvd drive connected (which of curse is true) and shuts the dvd player down.
the problem is the dvd is a dvd with educational videos for the dental practice. ripping the dvd as one file won't work as i have to have access to every single clip which unfortunately is not arranged in different vob's and so i would have to cut out every single sequence which is a lot of work.

any ideas?

regards

Hello,

I think you may want to try this: http://thelittleappfactory.com/ripit/

(lets you rip dvd's to the hard drive and keep all the menus) highly recommend this app - its costs a little, but it's well worth it.

Then as far as getting it to play you can use VLC (free app) I had a similar issue with mac's dvd app, but VLC works very well:

VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player

Hope this helps you out. Worked for me.

Different software may work for you. VLC (mentioned above) should be able to play a DVD .iso file or a directory full of DVD files (.VOB and .IFO) with the same quality and chapter marks as the original DVD.

If you are interested in RipIt then have a look at MacHeist nanoBundle as for $20 (the price of RipIt) you will get several other applications as well but there are only a few hours left before this offer closes.

i tried vlc. unfortunalte it just plays the dvd but there is no access to the menus.
this ripit app you are talking about. what format is the dvd after ripping?
as long as it is any kind of iso it won't work because that is what i have already.

tried ripit as well. seems to be JUST for ripping DVD's. i guess i will end up with an iso in the end, which is what i have alread

My first post..

Do you see a Video_TS folder from the DVD image you have? You might have to open the image to see it. But Mac OSx DVD player as well as VLC should open it like a reg DVD with menus intact. With DVD player it should be file-> open (then navigate to the Video_TS folder) With VLC it should be file-> open disc ( you should have a choice of choosing the Video_TS folder)

Hope this helps

thanks for the quick answer.
i can access the complete dvd after i mounted it.
the problem with the os x dvd player is that it shuts itself down after realising that no dvd drive is connected. there is no chance to adjust any settings or to direct it to the mounted image instead.
vlc kind of works but it takes very long to start and it is very buggy with things like stopping the movie, switching back to menu (desnt work at all) and other things like this. not very practical. alternatively i could burn a dvd from it and just use a dvd player (which we have in the surgery) but i would prefer to do everything from the mini10v.
has nothing to do wit my original question. i also have another patient edcation system which is in form of a windows program. as vmware doesnt run very well on a mini 10v with os x there is no chance to use this instead (which would be better as the animations are better and cover a wider rnage of treatments). the data from this system is saved in a .mmf file. does anyone know what kind of file this is?
would be great if i could extract the videos from there but i fear a bit that this program renders the animations everyt time i watch them instead of just playing video files which are somehow encoded in the mmf file.
hmm looks that i have to use my mbp instead

I didnt know that about DVD player quitting without a DVD drive. Im still waiting for my dell mini from FedEX.
Note i have ripit and rips end in .dvdmedia. clicking these files automatically opens Mac OSX dvd player. If i delete the .dvdmedia in get info its basically a folder with the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders inside.
What if you add the .dvdmedia extension to the DVD image you have to force OSX DVD player to open? Maybe it can bypass it checking for a dvd drive?

and sorry never heard of .mmf files..
