Default Bootable back up? (10v OSX) - 03-08-2010, 02:46 AM

Hi,

I ordered my 10v yesterday morning and should receive it within a fortnight. For now though, the research continues! I'm going to install Snow Leopard ASAP. Between Mechdrew/Meklort's excellent sites and Gizmodo's idiot-proof walkthru I'm feeling confident.

Anyway. I'm thinking forward to when I (hopefully) have OSX running sweetly and my various applications installed and firing: Perian, 1password, dropbox, Google Chrome etc. At that point I'd like to make a bootable back up, using something like Superduper!, CCC, Time Machine or something of that ilk.

Is this possible? Presumably I'd have to include NBI in there somehow... Can someone talk me through the steps please? Or, point me in the right direction?

Cheers all, James.

I use SuperDuper! with my 10v (OS X 10.6.2). Seems to boot just fine from the backup usb HDD.

I haven't tried it on my 10v yet, but I use CCC all the time on my desktop hackintosh and have never had an issue booting from the backup.

Well thank you gents, it appears it was a silly question!

I had read elsewhere that it doesn't recognise the OS when you try and boot from the back up... but perhaps with the 10v - like seemingly everything else - it just works!

Cheers.

I used ccc to clone 10.6.2 to external hdd. I deleted os on 10v, then ran clone as main os. Just remember to run NBI after cloning, or it won't work.

Thanks jmacie. So, CCC as normal, then run NBI, targetting the USB drive? Cool. I'll try it

Ordered myself a 2gb RAM stick today and a 500gb Seagate HDD

Been thinking about this some more... I'm not quite following the procedure. So, you run CCC and create a clone of the drive. As it stands, it won't boot/work.

Do you mean NetbookBootMaker, rather than NetbookInstaller? Surely it's NBM that installs the bootloader?

Sorry to be a pain. New to all this - just trying to understand as best I can. Thanks again.

W7ox & g00fy1: You don't run NBI/NBM? Does SD/CCC create a perfect working clone IYO?

W7ox, i have backed up with SuperDuper and regardless of the message at the end of the backup, i.e. "Step 4.Successfully booted from backup", I have been unable to actually do this.

When I enable USB Legacy Support, select boot from backup in the set up menu,(F2) after having run NetbookInstaller targeting the USB drive, I get an error message.

"nv memory tool unable to find/install nv memory cache" (not exact wording, sorry)

What I am interested to know, is this about the USB drives I have or is there some setting that I haven't correctly configured?

Have you tried to actually boot from your backup? Any clue to the nv memory thing from you or any other member much appreciated.

Cheers, Pete.
