Default Couple questions before install - 03-04-2010, 04:46 PM

My 10v will be here tomorrow and I'd like to have my USB stick all ready to go , I have a legit copy of Snow Leopard and have read many of the guides, threads and video's available. I do though have a couple of questions.

1-What is the difference between the NetbookBootMaker and NetbookInstaller ?

2-I have read how initially there were alot of problems with updating to 10.6.2, are these now pretty much fixed or is there still an audio and other issues to deal with ? How exactly do you update these, as I've read many threads, but it all seems still kinda sketchy with making sure you install but not rebooting without the flash drive and the boot loader..

3-Is there a way to put the .dmg package updates on the initial USB install(er) or do you have to install them after ?

TIA for any and all help and comments.

1. NetBookMaker is to be run against your USB key to make it an installer. It allows you to boot into the OS X installer.

NetBookInstaller is an application you run after you complete the OS X install process, but before you re-boot for the first time. It installs the kexts required by OS X to use your hardware as if it was a Mac.

2. As long as you use NBM/NBI 0.8.3 Final, you should be golden. Most issues come down to someone using the wrong version of these to install with and then updating without having them in place. As long as you have the proper NBM/NBI, one you finish your install, you can update 10.6.0 to 10.6.2 by using the built in software update feature, or you can download the update from the Apple site and run it separately.

3. I would just install them via software update.

I would add that a bootable image of NetbookInstaller can be used to bootstrap into the OS X installer. In fact, if you do not have access to a Mac (and, thus, cannot use NetbookBootmaker--at least for now), a bootable NBI drive (or NetbookCD) is what you will have to use for the install.

Also, with regard to updating to 10.6.2, remember that you will also need to run NBI again after the update is complete. Audio will not work until you do so and reboot.

Dell Mini 10v | Mac OS X 10.6.2 | Windows 7 Professional | Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 | 1GB RAM | 160GB HDD | BIOS A05 | USB Legacy: OFF | USB Wake: OFF | BT: Enabled (self-installed BCM2046) | NBI 0.8.3 final

Thank you both, I got my Mini Friday and did the install Friday afternoon without a hitch, I followed MechDrew's guide and I'm up and running. Really I just needed a little hand holding and a little more guidance and you both gave me that, I do appreciate it.

(I just wish that my Mini would have came with the proper backup discs as that would have saved me about an hour of tech support chats and CSR phone calls to finally get mine sent to me..)

Is this necessary if you are starting completely fresh with a new 10v and the latest bootmaker (final)?

Sorry, one more question> After the OS is installed from USB and the computer reboots on its own, do you remove the USB drive before it restarts or leave it place? Thanks

In that situation, the before should not be necessary (though it won't hurt). The after will be necessary if you want audio.

You can remove it if you want. You do not need/want to boot from the USB drive at that point.
