Unhappy Installing issues - 03-08-2010, 12:07 AM

Hi guys, i have the same issue where i created 2 drives
  1. Kingston 1GB USB drive and used Image Writer for Windows to write the NBI_083F file to it
  2. Have an 8GB drive with my macdvd.dmg
I boot up my Mini with both USB drive attached and it boots up saying Darwin/x86 boot v5.0.132 - Chameleon v2.0-RC3-nbi in the top left corner which indicates that the boot disk is working. Now the only 3 icons i see is:
  1. HDD
  2. Windows Recovery
  3. Windows OS
This means to me [first time so go easy on me] that my macdvd.dmg is not correct or do i miss something?

Sounds like you need to try re-making the 8GB SL drive. Try TransMac or dd.

Default Mini installation issue - 03-08-2010, 07:54 AM

Thanks for the reply, just a question regarding the 8GB drive....i have a the dmg file but just copied it from my PC to the drive and did not go through the Mac procedure as explained in the guides. I don't have access to a Mac and downloaded the dmg file so don't know if this is my problem. I am thinking i must just pop over to a Mac store and purchase a copy and make an img file out of it intead?

Any ideas?

If you mean you just copied it using Explorer etc., that won't work at all. You have to use TransMac, dd, or ImageWriter. Also, yes, spend the $30 on the retail OS X upgrade disc.

I digitally downloaded it and I have tried DD: fails. TransMacs won't burn to a USB and the Image write works but it doesn't read when in the bootloader.

Again you need the genuine retail upgrade disc. Legalities aside, there are apparently a lot of bad/modified images out there. Transmac does work. Many here have used it with great success.

I am having trouble installing Snow Leopard, as well.
I first had three partitions, with Win7 running on one of them and two blanks. With this setup, I got the "can't find mach_kernel" error. I thought it was a problem with the mac install usb, so I tried reripping and rewriting using many different methods (transmac, dd, linux) but nothing worked.
So I cleared all of the partitions and formatted the whole drive as NTFS. Ever since clearing off the partition with Win7, the only thing I get is "BOOTMGR is missing."
Out of all my tries, I don't think I have ever gotten into the boot loader screen.

That error is to be expected since you no longer have Windows installed. What error do you get when you try to boot the OS X installation drive(s)? Are you using the one or two drive method? If the two drive method, can you boot the NBI drive when only it is inserted?

I am using the alternate operating system method, so the two drive method.
Sadly, i can't even get into bootloader when only the NBI drive is inserted. So I'm guessing it's a problem with the NBI image USB? I have tried writing it using Transmac, UltraISO, dd.exe (first method using mechdrew's guide, but the second method did not work for me), Win32 Disk Imager, and Linux. They have all been fruitless attempts. I would either get "BOOTMGR is missing" or "Operating System not found". I got the "Operating System not found" error after I did a low level format on the flash drive before writing the NBI flash drive.
I even tried using an older method with the DellMiniBoot.iso and syslinux, but I just get into a blank screen with a blinking _.

Hi Guys

Sorry for the lack of feedback but i was away on work for a few days....i have downgraded my BIOS to A04 and since last time i have got my hands on proper MAC installation disks (2 of them Mac OS version 10.5.4). I boot it and select the option to select the MAC OS X Install Disk 1 and once i select it, wham i hid this error agian. I am bit confused to what i need to do next so if someone could help me i would be greatfull,

Also how does it work with the SL version because i have been in the shop and it is only an update so will it work if i purchase that instead than doing it with 10.5.4?
