Question from a noob about to start on the process of hackintoshing a 10v- is installing 10.6 easier, and less likely to run me into problems in the long run, than installing 10.5.8? It seems like there are still a few people who are running into issues with 10.6 (as happens with anything), but I wanted to ask before getting too knee-deep in this what those with expereince prefer.

Also, this will be my first hackintosh, and my first real foray into something as pleasant as messing with BIOS or installing an OS. Just never got around to it before, but I know my way around a computer at least.

I'd go to 10.6 (and did) because it is newer and has some added features. I believe it takes up less disk space, too -- but that's not a major factor.

neither is harder to install than the other...almost all people who've had an issue with 10.6 missed a simple step somewhere. follow mechdrew's guide closely and you shouldn't have a single problem.
anyways most of the improvements in 10.6 were to make the os quicker, snappier and more fluid. it has supposedly 100+ "refinements"...apple also claims the os takes close to 7gb less space than 10.5.

Just to add a practical reason for 10.6 over 10.5.8, Meklort stated in a thread here somewhere that he would most likely be dropping support for 10.5 in the next version of NBM/NBI.

Otherwise, I have run both and either is an excellent OS on the mini's.

Wow! Awesome- thanks for all your help, guys, and I'll definitely start with 10.6.

I do have one other question- when making the DOS boot USB disk... does it matter what version of Windows I have? I have a Dell Latitude running Windows 2000 Professional- Dell Bios A23 according to startup. Will I need to borrow a friend's machine, or since it's a DOS boot disk can the ancient Dell do the job? It would be a bit poetic as this would be the last task I asked it to do before retiring it.

I'm pretty sure it will work for you, personally I used XP but as long as it is Windows, I don't see why it wouldn't.

Thanks all for your help! Just installed SL last night from MechDrew's guide and worked like magic. Also, I ended up using adster's guide to downgrading my bios to A05 instead of the boot, and it worked as well. So far (knock on wood) everything's working out great for me and my 10v.

I've got A06 on my 10v and 9 ... but sure you had your reasons.

I like 10.5 because... it's not being significantly updated. (o: This means less worry about whether an update is going to break my happy little hackintosh.

Use the app called Monolingual to remove internationalization files. It will save you a large amount of space.
