So, I took the Sony drive back that I bought and purchase a 2GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro and a 16GB Sandisk Cruzer. So far, I've tried the method listed on mechdrew's page, but the mini would still not boot the USB drives, so now I'm waiting for TransMac to finish so I can give that a go. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll give the DVD drive method a go.
So, I've been having some issues in the very beginning steps of installing OSX, as you can see from my quote above from another semi-related thread.
I've got a few questions regarding the creation of the USB drives and actually booting from these drives:
1)If using TransMac, do you format the USB with the .dmg file, or change it to a .iso file in 'My Computer?'
2)After hitting F12 at the boot screen, should I be selecting "USB Storage" or "Removable Devices?"
I'm now using (1) SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2GB flash drive and (1) SanDisk Cruzer 16GB flash drive. I used the U3 unistall utility from the SanDisk site to remove the U3 software from both drives. I understood that these were confirmed to be bootable, correct?
What am I missing here?

FYI, boot options are set to:
Boot-time Diagnostic: Disabled
Intel SpeedStep: Enabled
On Board Lan Control: Enabled
WLAN Control: Enabled
USB BIOS Legacy Support: Enabled
USB Wake Support: Disabled
Function Key Behavior: Mulitmedia
I still have my boot order set to Hard Drive and then USB Storage, but I tried reversing them order with no different results
