Default FINALLY! Resolved my "Cannot find mach_kernel" & "Need to Restart" errors - 02-12-2010, 07:51 PM

Hi All,
Well after 2 weeks of getting the "mach_kernel" message or "please restart..." error I was able to get it going. The underlying issue was that the NBI install wouldn't recognize the filesystem I had on the 10v(fat32). My solution....

GParted live (GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD)

I created the bootable usb from the iso using transmac, then booted 10v to the GParted utility and formated the 10v hard drive with hfs+ filesystem. Once I did that the "mach_kernel" error was gone and the install started...

Once it started I had to then use the disk utility in the OSX install to make a Mac OS X extended journaled partition....

Prior to this I was reimaging my USB drives via the windows and linux methods, but had no luck.

Tools Used:

GParted live (GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD)
http://osx.mechdrew.com/downloads/NBI_083F.img
Retail OSX Snow Leopard DVD
TransMac (For writing images to USB sticks)

Hope this helps all of you with issues getting started....

Hi rlewkowski, and welcome to the forum!

I am pleased to hear that you managed to get there in the end.

You are certainly not alone in having received the dreaded 'mach_kernel' message, and as you found, some fairly 'low level' work on the hard drive is necessary before you can proceed further.

Hopefully the program you mentioned will be helpful to others also, so thank you for including the link. It does of course have to be used with care, but then so of course do all of these sort of programs!

I guess I'll give this method a try.

Is using the disk utility in SL part of mechdrew's process?

Yes, try this. FWIW, I doubt it was the file system change that made the difference. When he re-formatted the drive using GParted, it probably also wrote a new MBR, which cleared up the problem he was having due to the failed partial installation. I almost recommended that you try GParted in the other thread. It is a great app, but I wasn't sure whether it actually deleted the boot code from the MBR or just modified the partition table. I am guessing that it does.

Yes, you have to use disk utility to set up the disk during the install, and the steps for doing so are in the guide.

OK, I'm in Gparted

I'm looking at a screen that has

Partition File System Label Size Used Unused Flags
/dev/sda1 fat 32 EFI 200.00 MiB 3.09 MiB 196.91 MiB boot
/dev/sda2 hfs+ mac 148.73 GiB 287.54 MiB 148.45 GiB
unallocated 125.53 MiB

What do I do from here?

Delete the Mac partition. Create a new partition in the large unallocated space with which that will leave you. Format that partition as HFS+. (I don't think that is actually necessary but it won't hurt).
